New Balance 520 Platform History
From manufacturing arch supports to hogging a massive chunk of the running community, New Balance sneakers had proved that a success story can be marinated through time. With a century-old legacy in its name, New Balance proves to flourish in the sneaker market in the concurrent years due to its strong inclination with technicality and performance. Above those running nut features and quality upbringing, the Boston-based company had more to offer to the lifestyle table.
New Balance’ progressive years happened in the 70s approaching the 90s when athletics and fashion are still two unmerging facets of society. It was a decade of enhancing performance for New Balance, and their passion for achieving greatness proved them right. Since the brand caught the momentum from the inaugural Trackster from the 50s, they continued to enhance their portfolio.
The New Balance shoe in the early stretches of the 70s was never an eye-catching silhouette. It was until 1976 when Terry Heckler designed the now famous 320 model with a glistening “N” label on the sides. The N feature was also his creation, and its debut in the 320 model sparked a booming framework that would traverse decades. But if there’s any consolation, the 320 sneaker was advertised not by runners, but of old people that was the early makings of a true hipster.
Designs soon came sweeping the New Balance design floor like a flint fire igniting a gasoline tank. Silhouettes like the 420, 515, 530, and 574 began to sprout like mushrooms in the following years. Though these trainers embody a different style and function, they all serve a great purpose of providing runners added mileage while they cross terrains. One version within the pack stood out as the pioneer of the separated saddle technology--the New Balance 520.
The 520’s assembly became the coveted New Balance go-to design which was incorporated in several editions released in the subsequent years. Originally a running shoe, the NB 520 was built to accommodate certain aspects for running including mileage, training on pavement, stability and motion control, and pronation. It was also one of the New Balance models that utilized orthotics.
Fast forward to 2017 when the New Balance 520 rejoins its 500 series buddies in the lifestyle arena. Its baptismal debut took the form of the Hairy Suede Pack which was released in July of the same year. The sneakers in this pack are composed of cleanly cut nylon and suede with the latter bearing slightly longer fibers than the usual.
To satisfy the cravings of the ladies, the now global giant introduced the New Balance 520 Platform in 2018 which is an edgy take on the vintage runner. The said iteration garners an elevated look via the plush EVA midsole tooling with a jagged ripple treading underneath. Its uppers are made of luxurious suede materials with matching brogue detailing emphasizing feministic flair.
