The New Balance 420 Re-Engineered sneaker is covered with an interlaced network of threads that breathes easy and offers comfort to the feet. The upper of this unisex sneaker is coupled with a lacing system that provides a personalized, lockdown fit. This low-top shoe is available in mens’ and women’s sizes.

New Balance resurrected its 1970s runner and redressed it with a slimmer silhouette as seen in the 420 Re-Engineered model. The traditional suede and mesh combo for the upper is re-engineered by fusing synthetic material and producing an improved version that is lightweight and breathable. This re-imagined version in the same low-top vintage form is made into multiple variations with masculine and feminine styles which are appealing for any casual everyday outfit, be it for street wear or business wear.

The recognizable vintage New Balance 420 gets a modern upgrade with the release of the Re-Engineered version, which is highly noticeable for its no-sew upper. This re-imagined variation is made into a sleek, fashionable sneaker with various design options that favors men and women buyers. Apart from its external features, the cushioning property of the New Balance 420 Re-Enginereed is one of the reasons why this edition is appealing to heaps of sneaker enthusiasts.

New Balance 420 is one of the many models that stormed the market back in the 1970s, when road races and recreational running has become a part of millions of lives. The running craze was ignited by the creation of marathons in Seattle, New York City, and Atltanta in US during that era.

Eventually, the interest in this sport became global that starting in 1972 apart from Portland-based races, mini running competitions occurred in Vancouver, Auckland, Christchurch, and Berlin which were mostly exclusive to paid-up members.

Fun runs and charity runs were also born and women runners were given the opportunity to participate in these events. Soon enough, running became a billion-dollar industry as more runners and brands found interest in this field.

  The New Balance Trackster

By this time, in the early 1970s, New Balance has already introduced its prominent Trackster shoe, the world’s first ripple-soled running shoe for men, which offered extra traction against slips and extra bounce in every stride.

One of the remarkable features of the Trackster that instantly set it apart from other running shoes on the market that time is its availability in varying width measurements. The extreme width option offered by New Balance for this shoe gave athletes the impression of a customized fit.

New Balance benefited enormously with the sudden growth of recreational jogging and serious running during that time. Needless to say, it was a busy period for the brand as it tried to respond to the demand of the running public.

In 1979, New Balance introduced the 420 high-mileage running shoe, a successor of the New Balance 320 which is a trainer for competitive runners and running enthusiasts that has dual layers of cushioning and nearly frictionless nylon mesh upper.

When Performance Shoes Crossed the Lifestyle Fashion

As the running era reaches its eclipse towards the 1990s, another trend took shape with the rise of the sneaker culture where the familiar trainers are made into go-to casual shoes for everyday wear. Performance shoes are suddenly transformed into fashionable casual sneakers and the New Balance running shoe line was no exception.  The 420, for instance, received strings of upgrades to fit the varying trends, particularly at the start of the new century.

In 2008 this vintage runner was given a splash of different colorways as New Balance competed with other players in the market that are resurrecting popular classic models from their performance shoe vault. A year later, this running model received a striking non-creasing metal infused nylon upper combined with a buttery, full-grain leather on the toe and suede overlays. This stylish version was originally released in beige/brown and green purple.

The old runner gets a complete transformation again in 2015 when New Balance dropped the 420 Iridescent Snakeskin flushed with reptile detailing, slithering across the upper  on a black and gray midsole and lustrous outsole.

The Birth of NB 420 Re-Engineered

As many modern technologies are being developed in the coming years, New Balance has found ways of streamlining its running silhouettes and transforming them into appealing, versatile casual wear. In 2016, New Balance introduced the 420 Re-Engineered, which absolutely trimmed down the overlay elements of the classic runner.

The upper of this re-engineered variation echoes modernity in every angle with the presence of fused synthetic paneling on a bed of strong, breathable mesh. The initial drop of this iteration was in three colorways, an all-black, an immaculate white with gray, and black and white.

  • The midsole of this low-top 420 sneaker has an innovative, proprietary REVlite component that provides responsiveness and durability.
  • The use of the REVlite feature makes the New Balance 420 Re-Engineered 30 percent lighter than other sneakers built with traditional foam compound.
  • The outsole is made with long-lasting rubber material.
