I think Mizuno have done a great job on updating this shoe – they have managed to make the Ultima 9 fit a much wider range of people. The upper has a light, airy feel, while still retaining its narrow snug fit.
Updates to Mizuno Wave Ultima 9
- Mizuno presents the ninth iteration of the Wave Ultima series, a road-running shoe that claims to be softer, smoother, and more comfortable than ever before, with its updated features and the introduction of new shoe technology. This versatile running gear promises a more precise fit and support that is ideal for neutral pronators who frequent medium distances.
- Similar to the previous versions, the Wave Ultima 9 also has AIRmesh as its upper. This material is tried-and-tested for its superb breathability. It is coupled by stitched overlays that provide long-lasting support and structure.
- The midsole of this shoe introduces a new feature called the Cloudwave, which comes in the form of convex geometry to let more cushioning that will lessen heel impact. Meanwhile, ever-present are other classic technologies such as the SmoothRide Engineering, the Intercool system, and the U4ic midsole material. The outsole also remains to be the X10 made from the brand’s proprietary carbon rubber, aimed at delivering protection and grip while running on roads or groomed trails.
Mizuno Wave Ultima 9 size and fit
The Mizuno Wave Ultima 9 was built using the standard measurement schemes for a running shoe; thus, wearers will find that it is true-to-size. The shoe has an anatomical shape that follows the natural curves of the foot. With a width profile of medium in both the men’s and women’s versions, the Mizuno Wave Ultima 9 will accommodate runners with a low to moderate foot volume.
The X10 outsole material is made from a compound of durable carbon rubber, which effectively shields the midsole from abrasive surfaces. This feature also enhances surface traction to permit continuous running without any restrictions. The same outsole element is also placed in Wave Prophecy 8 running shoe.
The forefoot part uses blown rubber, which is a softer material compare to carbon rubber. It is meant to add extra cushioning to the area, allowing the toe-off phase to be faster and springier. To further make the movement more manageable, there are flex grooves along the sides of the forefoot.
The Wave Ultima 9 introduces a relatively novel feature by Mizuno: The Cloudwave technology. With Cloudwave, runners get a soft and responsive ride coupled by a smooth transition from landing to toe-off. This feature comes in the form of a convex-shaped unit – like a wave – and is placed in the forefoot area, in between the midsole and the outsole.
The main midsole component of the Wave Ultima 9 is the U4ic, a full-length foam that equips the shoe with reliable cushioning and shock absorption. Compared to other midsole materials, the U4ic is 30% more lightweight. The U4ic material works with the concept of Mizuno Wave, which is a technology that enables the midsole to be both cushioned and stable, therefore catering to a wide range of running styles.
At the heel area is an even lighter version of the U4ic, the U4ic X. This material could be seen as the shoe’s Strobel board and heel wedge, both adding comfort and underfoot cushioning to encourage the runner to log more miles.
The Wave Ultima 9 also produces a rocking-chair effect thanks to the SmoothRide Engineering. This technology works by combining the functionality of flex grooves and the durability of Mizuno’s AP+ midsole material. SmoothRide Engineering reduces the rate of the foot’s acceleration and deceleration for a smoother and more consistent transition.
The Mizuno Intercool is a ventilation system within the midsole that reduces the heat and humidity buildup inside the shoe, thereby cooling the underfoot.
A Premium Insock is included as the sock liner of the Mizuno Wave Ultima 9. It is made with premium materials and offers additional cushioning and comfort. The Premium Insock is removable and may be replaced by custom orthotics.
The AIRmesh upper of the Mizuno Wave Ultima 9 aims for an exceptional level of breathability and comfort for the runner. It is a lightweight fabric that delivers optimal airflow through visible pores in its surface. Despite its light and airy appearance, the AIRmesh is durable and can effectively withstand wears and tears with minimal effort.
Working with the AIRmesh is the Dynamotion Fit system, a feature that enables the upper to be stretchable and adaptive, permitting the upper to contour to the wearer’s foot as naturally as possible. The concept of Dynamotion Fit targets an irritation-free fit and feel. As the foot moves, the shoe follows accordingly by mimicking each flex.
The Mizuno Flex Eyelets double-duty as the shoe’s stitched-on overlays; they assist the Dynamotion Fit system by locking the foot down during stride. This allows the rest of the upper to stretch and contract as necessary.
