Mizuno Wave Sky 5: As premium as you can get

When we say premium, it's not only reflected in the Mizuno Wave Sky 5's tag but also in its quality and build. Sure, it's got that generously padded, plush upper that envelops the foot with utmost comfort, but it doesn't stop there. The magic happens in the midsole.

Who and what is it for?

The Mizuno Wave Sky is perfect for beginners looking for a highly stable yet cushy daily training shoe. Even though it's a neutral running shoe, it's still a great selection for mild to moderate overpronators (whose feet roll inward), thanks to its supportive qualities.

Pace: Slow to moderate

Surface: Road or track

Distance: Short to long distances

What is it for?

  • Easy days
  • Recovery runs
  • Slow, long-distance runs
  • Walking

The midsole anatomy: "A luxury, heavy-duty sports sedan"

The Wave Sky has a three-part midsole. On the top-most layer, a lighter version of the U4ic X is embedded for stability. Below it, Mizuno's ENERZY CORE sits, boosting responsiveness. And on the bottom-most layer, there's the ENERZY FOAM, generating a balance between firmness, softness, and energy return. For reference, the ENERZY FOAM can feel like Skechers Hyper Burst foam

Altogether, they create a lively, shock-absorbent, stable, and comfortable ride that doesn't inhibit the natural movement of the foot.

Mizuno Wave Sky 5 vs. 4

The Mizuno Wave Sky 3 was lauded for its rebounding ride. The 4 was a letdown. Now, the question is: can the Wave Sky 5 rekindle the fire of the Wave Sky 3?

Spoiler alert: It surpasses it!

The changes implemented to the Mizuno Wave Sky 5 are as huge as its silhouette. So, expect a top-to-bottom update:

  • The upper is now roomier in the toe box, and it departs from a knit to a mesh upper for a rub-free sensation;
  • For a stable, peppy, yet forgiving ride, the midsole's foams have been re-arranged, while the Wave plate has been removed, and;
  • On the outsole, the rubber is thinner, moving away from the bottom-heavy Mizuno Wave Sky 4, and it has a more decoupled rear section (less rubber coverage) for weight saving.
