Merrell Moab FST Ice+ Thermo notable features

-Designed to endure wet and cold seasons, this hiking footwear from Merrel is equipped with the M Select DRY that seals out water to keep the feet dry.

-They also come with 100 grams M Select WARM for insulation and a conductor fleece lining for added warmth and comfort.

-What makes it suitable for icy terrain is the Vibram Arctic Grip outsole. The lugs are deep enough to create strong traction on slick surfaces.

Size and fit

Despite being a winter boot, the FST Ice+ Thermo has a flexible construction. The last cradles the foot while the leather upper conforms to its shape. This boot also features a traditional lace-up closure, with top hooks to keep the lace in place despite vigorous movement.

This mid-cut hiking boot has sizes available for men and women.

For this boot, Merrell has partnered with Vibram - a leading sole manufacturing company known for its quality and durable products. The Moab FST Ice+ Thermo features the Arctic Grip technology which is considered the most advanced cold weather outsole by Vibram.

This sole is made entirely of rubber. It doesn’t contain any metal components or inserts and is specifically designed to provide traction on wet ice. Compared with other Vibram soles, the Arctic Grip has a better grip on cold, iced, or snowy surfaces.

Aside from the high-quality, durable rubber, this Vibram outsole also features multi-directional lugs with a depth of 5mm. All these reinforce the grip and traction of the boot.

Furthermore, the sole of the boot extends up to the front of the toe to provide grip at the tip and heel.

Being part of the Merrell Moab collection, the Moab FST Ice+ Thermo uses the M Select FIT.ECO blended EVA that provides a good amount of cushion, support, and flexibility. It is also very light compared to rubber.

The M Select FIT.ECO is an exclusive technology by Merrell. It’s basically an advanced footbed crafted from blended EVA designed to provide increased support. Meanwhile, the zonal arch and heel reinforcement give stability and comfort.

Lastly, the boot features the exclusive Merrell air cushion - a sealed unit in the heel section of the footwear that has ergonomic, shock-absorbent qualities.

The Merrell Moab FST Ice+ Thermo has a 3D print upper made with leather, mesh, and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) cage which is highly flexible, water-resistant, and lightweight.

Inside the shoe is a hundred gram of insulation, plus a conductor fleece lining that is very warm and soft. This footwear is also equipped with a molded nylon arch shank - a lightweight material that keeps the boot in shape.

Lastly, the boot has a lace-up closure. The lace hooks on top allow the wearer to adjust the fit whenever needed.

Merrell Moab FST Ice+ Thermo vs Thermo Glacier Mid WP

Merrell has a lot of high-quality kicks in its winter collection. Among the most popular are the Moab FST Ice+ Thermo and Thermo Glacier Mid Waterproof. Both these boots are equipped with the Arctic Grip outsole. However, they have a few notable differences.

Weight. At 1,791g per pair, the Moab FST Ice+ Thermo is much heavier than the Thermo Glacier Mid WP which weighs 1,172g. Thus, if you enjoy backpacking with a heavy load, you will find this current model a much better option.

Price. Both of these models fall under the premium category, though the Thermo Glacier Mid Waterproof is lower in price.

Construction. As mentioned earlier, the Moab FST Ice+ Thermo combines mesh, leather, and TPU for its upper. Meanwhile, the Thermo Glacier Mid WP is made of full-grain leather. While both of these models are equipped with insulation, the current model provides a little more breathability due to the mesh regions. Lastly, although these hikers are considered “mid tops”, the Glacier shoe has a higher cut.
