Light, robust and comfortable both on and off the bike, Mavic have really knocked it out of the park with the XA Pro shoe, highly recommended.
It would make a fantastic option for bikepacking enthusiasts who need one shoe for all occasions while they are out exploring. For pure gravity use, one of Mavic’s burlier pairs are certainly better suited, but for nearly everything else, these are great to slip on and simply forget about.
The XA Pro is built for off-road adventures. This pair of mountain bike shoes from Mavic features a solid outsole that attenuates shock and a tread pattern conducive for hiking. Meanwhile, the top is built to keep debris out. It closely wraps the foot, preventing hot spots and unnecessary movements.
Durability. The Mavic XA Pro is equipped with the Energy Grip Trail+ outsole. This compound has a high resistance to abrasion and sharp edges.
Grip. This cycling footwear features the Contragrip tread pattern. It is designed to provide traction when traversing trails with loose soil, rocks, roots, or even mud.
Pedaling power. Inside the outsole is a carbon composite internal plate. It adds to the rigidity of the unit but still retaining some flexibility for walking.
According to Mavic, this model has a stiffness index of IET60/100. It means that it is rigid enough that it won’t bend while the user is pedaling, but still easy to walk in.
A two-hole cleat system is typically used in mountain cycling shoes like the Mavic XA Pro. It is compatible with clipless mountain bike pedals, including the Shimano M530, the Nukeproof Horizon CS, the DMR V-Twin, and the Crankbrothers Mallet E 11, to name a few.
Protection. The top of the Mavic XA Pro is made from a lightweight and anti-rip material. Several layers of textiles have been thermally-bonded to create a seamless profile that prevents dirt from getting in. It also has a molded toe cap that protects the toes against bumps while hiking.
Comfort. The Endofit Tongue protects the instep against abrasion and pressure created by the strap and cable. It is an internal sleeve that hugs the foot to prevent chafing and blisters.Closing mechanism. There are two types of fit-adjustment systems used on the XA Pro. Up top is a single Velcro strap. The other is the Mavic Ergo Dial QR, which consists of a wire that tightens or looses, depending on the direction you turn the dial. Both contraptions can be quickly adjusted using one hand, even while on the move.
Inside this Mavic cycling shoe is the OrthoLite insole. This thin foam unit prevents the foot from sliding around while pedaling. It also works with the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) midsole in reducing the force of impact felt by foot while walking.
The Mavic XA Pro is serviceable. Replaceable parts include the OrthoLite insole and the Ergo Dial QR.
