It smears like a charm—this is likely what climbing enthusiasts would say the moment they ascend in the Skwama. That said, smearing is not the only department where this rock shoe shines. Indeed, this La Sportiva product also excels in the areas of edging and bouldering.

-The La Sportiva Skwama climbing shoe is engineered for senders who require a balance between comfort and precise performance in ascending technical routes. It comes with a patented technology called P3 (a.k.a. Permanent Power Platform) which promises to prevent stretch as much as possible. This tech also works with the shoe’s split-sole construction in mitigating edge disfigurement.

-The amount of sensitivity it offers is thanks to its slip-lasted construction. La Sportiva designers built the rock shoe with the S-Heel technology to help wearers pull off heel-hooking maneuvers with enhanced security and control.

Downturn. This offering from La Sportiva is an aggressively downturned rock climbing shoe. The pointiness and rigidity of its down-camber provide users with a precise footing on micro-edges and tiny holds. This type of downturn makes the Skwama ideal for single-pitch ascents.

Applications. The La Sportiva Skwama is built for sport climbing and bouldering, whether indoors or outdoors. It comes with the necessary components to take on slabs and overhangs alike. It is designed mainly for intermediate climbers.

A low-top climbing shoe for men and women is the La Sportiva Skwama. Its construction promises minimal stretch. The snug fit around its heel is all thanks to the S-Heel technology. A secure and customized lockdown, on the other hand, is courtesy of the shoe’s Velcro closure.

Built on an asymmetric PD 75 last, it delivers a performance fit. The shoe is curved toward the inner side, focusing power to the big toe.

Midsole. The Skwama’s underfoot support comes from its LaspoFlex midsole with P3 technology. It has an overall thickness of 0.8 mm.

Outsole. In terms of surface grip, the La Sportiva Skwama relies on its 4-mm thick Vibram outsole, called XS Grip 2. Its rubber compound renders it capable of clinging to different types of terrain with adequate shock absorbency. It is classified as an ideal for steep overhanging routes.

The La Sportiva Skwama’s low-cut upper is partly leather and partly microfiber. Since it comes without a liner, it offers an intimate in-shoe feel. Additional protection and security when scaling cramped footholds are thanks to its heavy-duty rubber rand. The shoe’s toe box and instep are also with randing to give wearers sufficient control and grip when toe hooking.

A singular strap is what makes up the lockdown system of this leather climbing shoe. It comes with hook-and-loop fasteners, making it highly adjustable. To aid climbers during on and off, La Sportiva engineers furnished the shoe with not one, but two heel pull tabs.

The Skwama and the Solution are arguably two of the most lauded aggressive rock climbing kicks from La Sportiva. As such, people compare the two more often than not, and for a good reason. If the chance of owning both is slim for you, which means you are only capable of purchasing one or the other, then the points that follow can help you determine which one offers the better deal.

Weight. On this front, the featured shoe (a.k.a. the Skwama) takes the crown. Indeed, it is lighter than the La Sportiva Solution by about 50 g.

Upper. The two climbing kicks in this comparison both have mostly leather uppers. That said, only the Solution’s is with a liner, albeit covering the arch and toe zones only.

Asking price. Those who find great value in climbing shoes with less expensive price tags might find the La Sportiva Skwama the more enticing offering. Yes, the featured product is cheaper than the Solution by about $10.

Midsole. Both of these footwear pieces are engineered with the LaspoFlex midsole. That said, the one in the Solution reinforces the toe region only. Also, there is a difference in thickness between versions. The midsole of the men’s Skwama is thinner than the competition’s by 0.3 mm. The women’s Skwama, on the other hand, is thinner by 0.1 mm than the women’s Solution.
