Keen was founded in 2003 and launched various iterations that displayed thick black toe bumper. This element aims to provide sufficient protection on foot, especially on the toe area. Keen began offering footwear for sailing and other outdoor and water activities and further expanded to lifestyle sneakers.

In 2003, Keen was tagged by the trade publication Footwear News as the "Launch of the Year" in the shoe industry. As the brand grows, several iterations were added to its product lineups, such as casual and cold-weather footwear, bags, socks, and clothing.

The Keen company was also involved in several relief operations and one action that created a pivotal moment in the company was during the Asian tsunami in 2004. The brand pulled out its $1 million advertising budget and redirected to the disaster relief operation. This action shaped the brand culture which is giving back and doing what is right.

Six years after its initial launch, the brand has garnered estimated sales of $130 to $140 million. The brand grew into safety work footwear business giving birth to the Keen Utility Tacoma work boots. In 2011, the brand's revenue exponentially grew to $240 million.
