Bottom line

Keds gives a luxe update to its Kickstart shoe model through the Keds Kickstart Nubuck. The tennis-inspired silhouette receives soft nubuck upper for extra glam and flair.

However, the material upgrade comes at a price – it could get stiff at the heel part such that it rubs on the skin and causes blisters. Despite this, the Kickstart Nubuck is still considered by many as a comfortable pair, especially once broken in.

Like the Keds Kickstart and the rest of the shoes in the Keds Kickstart Collection, this nubuck variation takes inspiration from classic tennis shoes with its low-top construction and lace-to-toe design. The upper material hugs the foot but gives ample space in the toe box.

The six-eyelet lace closure is adjustable to accommodate a custom fit while keeping the foot secure and protected. Overall support is good, including arch support that typically lacks in most Keds sneakers.

The Keds Kickstart Nubuck transforms the laidback look of the Kickstart into a more luxe and street-ready façade. The material upgrade from canvas or plain leather to luxurious and soft nubuck elevates the athletic and fashion-forward appeal of the classic Kickstart. Although the update gives a different look from the original, the Kickstart Nubuck retains the versatility of the original. It remains as flexible as the other Kickstart renditions that you can wear it with a variety of outfits from sunup to sundown.

The Keds Kickstart Nubuck is available in sage and light peach colorways.

This low-top sneaker from Keds carries the DNA of the popular Keds Kickstart tennis-inspired sneakers. Designed and patterned after the Kickstart, the Keds Kickstart Nubuck followed the Kickstart's original profile and features but the upper material. This particular rendition skips the usual canvas or leather uppers and opts for a premium nubuck material instead.

US-based footwear brand Keds was officially founded in 1916 initially as “Peds" under the United States Rubber Company. Best known for its classic, comfortable, and high-quality sneakers for women, Keds remains as one of the leading brands in the sneaker industry up to this day. Among its bestsellers is the original Keds sneaker – the Keds Champion

In 2016, Keds introduced another women-exclusive low-top sneaker called the Keds Kickstart. Like the Champion, it boasts breathable and lightweight canvas uppers that sit atop a flexible and durable rubber outsole. The Kickstart instantly gained a huge following and worldwide popularity to the extent that Keds immediately introduced several variations of the original silhouette. Some of these are the Keds Kickstart Leather and the Keds Kickstart Perf Leather. The Kickstart also made it into the Keds x Kate Spade collaboration through the Keds x Kate Spade Kickstart Leather and Keds x Kate Spade Kickstart Nubuck sneakers, among others.

But the Keds Kickstart’s popularity and growing market demand did not stop there. Just recently, Keds launched another variation called the Keds Kickstart Nubuck. The shoe takes the design and construction of the original Kickstart but uses a nubuck upper instead of the typical canvas. Each pair of the Keds Kickstart Nubuck originally retails for $70.

  • The eyelets are not reinforced with metal materials.
  • The cotton laces are tonal and flat.
  • This shoe features Dream Foam insoles for added comfort.
  • The rubber outsole gives durable traction.
