A basketball-inspired high-top sneaker, the Jordan Son of Mars provides superior ankle support with added in-shoe comfort from the full-length PU midsole. There is also a signature midfoot strap that allows a lockdown and secure fit, in addition to the traditional lace-up closure that can be laced all the way up to the top part. The plastic lace lock on the tongue also adds to the secure fit of the shoe.
The Jordan Son of Mars is one of those Jordan lifestyle silhouettes that genuinely stand out because of its key elements that were taken from five of the well-recognized Jordan shoes ever released. Like the highly acclaimed Jordan Spizike, the Son of Mars boasts an athletic-but-stylish look with high-cut construction and basketball-inspired silhouette that one can confidently wear on and off the court.
Multiple colorways are available, with either leather or nubuck material on the upper that only adds to the shoe’s durability and premium look.
Styling each pair of the men’s Jordan Son of Mars sneaker as it comes in a wide selection of colorways. Wear the “Marvin the Martian” or “Hot Lava” for a bright accent to your jeans or joggers and plain shirt outfit. Wear the Jordan Son of Mars “Black Metallic” and “Black Cement” colorways if you want a more minimalist shoe that is not hard to pull off with any other street-style clothes.
Love it or hate it, this Jordan hybrid shoe model is one for the books. The Jordan Son of Mars has a silhouette combining design elements from some of the best Jordan shoes, but still has its own identity that the buyers took notice.
One of the many features that set it apart from other Jordan shoes is the midfoot strap, a borrowed element from the Air Jordan XX, that functions to give a lockdown and secure fit to the wearer. The tongue, which was from the Air Jordan V, has a reflective 3M detailing that the buyers appreciate.
Most basketball sneaker fans have always been loyal to the Jordan brand. Some of these Air Jordan fans were fans of the great Michael Jordan themselves that almost anything that His Airness has touched and experienced eventually becomes an inspiration for another iconic Air Jordan sneaker. The Jordan brand with its now legendary Jumpman logo has now become a sought after brand and the ultimate game accessory on and off the court.
While some of the most in-demand designs of the Jordan brand, a subsidiary of global footwear giant Nike, will always be the OGs to the retro releases of the Jordan 1 to the last shoe that Michael Jordan has ever worn on the NBA court. Many models have also dropped over the years honoring the legacy of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Among these shoes are the so-called hybrids which fuse several design elements from past Jordan designs while incorporating other aspects and characters associated with Michael Jordan. One such hybrid sneaker is the Jordan Son of Mars.
Jordan Son of Mars origins
Legendary film director Spike Lee took a crucial part in the Air Jordan line’s early years. Together with Michael Jordan himself, Lee appeared in a series of iconic commercials for the Nike Air Jordan shoes as his Mars Blackmon character in the 1986 film “She’s Gotta Have It.” The ad campaign ran from the late 1980s to early 1990s with "It's gotta be da shoes" as one of the identifying and catchy phrases.
In 2006, the Jordan brand introduced a shoe model that honors this historical relationship between Michael Jordan and Spike Lee, the Jordan Spiz'ike or simply Spizike. The Spizike is a successful hybrid of several iconic Jordan shoes of all time such as the Air Jordan III, IV, V, VI, IX, and XX.
Fast forward to March 2012 when the Jordan brand introduced another hybrid model following the success of the Spizike. Called as the Jordan Son of Mars, the shoe was named after Mars Blackmon as another tribute to Spike Lee. Like the Spizike, it is a hybrid of several Jordan models that presents an array of Lee's lengthy influence on the brand's popularity and eminent presence.
The new silhouette of the Son of Mars fuses vital elements from the Air Jordan III, IV, V, VI, and XX. The famed elephant print accent of the Air Jordan III can also be seen on the upper of the Jordan Son of Mars basketball sneaker, particularly around the heel counter area and towards the toe, while the Jordan VI’s influence is through the netting running below the laces. The sole construction, including the icy splatter detailing, is a nod to the Air Jordan V as well as the textured Jumpman tongue and the ever-recognizable see-through lace locks. Its ankle construction, including the loop on back and perforated paneling on the side, took inspiration from the VI. And lastly, the midfoot strap, which provides a lockdown fit, is a borrowed feature from the Air Jordan XX.
The following year, with the early success of the Son of Mars among Jordan fans, the Jumpman brand released a low-top Son of Mars called the Jordan Son of Mars Low in 2013. The Son of Mars Low sneaker line was also a significant income-generating endeavor for the brand as bestselling colorways like Black Cement, White Cement, Hot Lava, Tour Yellow, and Hornet was released.
Meanwhile, the release of the OG Son of Mars silhouette, referred by some as another “Frankenstein” Jordan, drew different reactions not only from Jordan fanatics and critics but also from the general market. Some liked the $160 basketball kick in an instant, while others had mixed feelings about its design and colors. Nonetheless, the Jordan Son of Mars continued being an interesting hybrid shoe that, bit by bit, it became one of the brand’s highly coveted new silhouette with many colorways released.
Jordan Son of Mars colorways
As the name of the Jordan Son of Mars basketball sneaker slowly gained traction, several interesting colorways were released in succeeding years. Jordan Son of Mars release dates has become a regular cause for the anticipation of Jumpman brand fans.
When the Son of Mars was initially launched, it came in white/club purple/cool grey/black color combination. The colors are blended into the leather upper that sits on the translucent sole. Some of its essential features include laser etching on the midfoot strap, cement print on the toe and heel areas.
A Jordan Son of Mars in black and red or “Bred” colorway also came out on the same year as the first release. The Chicago Bulls-inspired colorway keeps the leather upper in a majority of black color leaving only the cement print in the toe box from the OG version. It has a 3M tongue with a translucent sole with pops of red in the laces and toe.
The Jordan Son of Mars sneaker silhouette was also offered for a customized look through NikeiD. For a slightly higher price of $200, one can customize their Jordan Son of Mars sneaker with a choice of elephant or leather in the upper, midsole, toe cap or heel. The heel can also be customized with unique numbers or letters with a limit of six characters only. The customized kick can be finished with a black, Infrared 23 or a translucent outsole unit.
Announced as early as December 2016, the Jordan Son of Mars black metallic colorway was dropped on New Year’s Day of 2017. Decked in the same colorway as the OG metallic silver Air Jordan V, it features a black leather upper with perforations at the ankle sitting on top of an icy blue translucent sole. The Jumpman logo on the tongue and heel and the shark teeth accent on the midsole are then rendered in metallic silver, the men’s Jordan Son of Mars black metallic also sold at $160 when it was released to retailers on January 1, 2017.
More recent colorway drops of the Jordan Son of Mars shoes include the fire red and armory navy iterations. The Jordan Son of Mars fire red is another pair inspired by the Air Jordan V OG colorway. It is comprised of a mostly white leather upper with black detailing on the heel and tongue tabs. Fire red hits are also incorporated into the Jumpman branding, inner lining, shark teeth, and parts of the outsole.
The Jordan Son of Mars armory navy, meanwhile, comes in a fusion of armory navy, white, wolf grey, and electrolime colors. It features a graphic printed midfoot strap, elephant print overlay on toes and heels, and bright electrolime accents that contrast the armory navy leather upper.
