Yonex’s roots in badminton run deep. Though the company started off manufacturing wooden floats for fishing, it eventually moved to crafting sporting goods. In 1957, it released its first badminton rackets followed by shuttlecocks.

Though it is not clear when the first Yonex badminton shoes were released, the sport is clearly ingrained deeply at the company’s core. It has a decent line-up of trainers dedicated to badminton, all equipped with technologies that provide traction, support, and comfort.

Best Yonex badminton shoes - December 2019

Double Russel Mesh

Yonex badminton trainers typically employ mesh with synthetic reinforcements to aid in foot containment. A type of mesh found in some of these shoes is the Double Russel. It is a lightweight and durable fabric with ultra-fine pores that provides eight times more breathability than regular mesh.

Durable Skin Light

In some Yonex models, instead of mesh, the upper is made of a polyurethane-based material called the Durable Skin Light. This top material combines the flexibility of rubber with the stiffness of hard plastic to deliver a hard-wearing upper that comfortably fits the foot.

Toe Assist Shape

The uppers of Yonex badminton shoes are thoughtfully designed. They feature the Toe Assist Shape, which ensures that not much pressure is placed on the big toe while keeping the midfoot and heel fit snug.

Lateral Shell

This innovation is a specialized overlay placed on the lateral side of the forefoot. It helps with foot containment, preventing it from sliding around during agile movements.

Power Cushion

All Yonex badminton shoes are equipped with the Power Cushion midsole. This proprietary cushioning technology has been engineered to provide comfort by deflecting the force of impact and turning it into energy for push-off. It is so bouncy that when you drop a raw egg on it, it bounces back up instead of splattering on the floor.

A new iteration of this unit, the Power Cushion+, features a special elastic resin in its blend. It is said to have 28% more shock absorption and 62% more repulsion than the previous version.

Synchro-Fit Insole

This foam insert is crafted to ensure full contact between the foot and the shoe to reduce energy waste. The heel is constructed to be slightly elevated to follow the natural shape of the foot. It improves the fit and ensures the foot has maximum grip inside the trainers.

Graphite plate

A graphite plate is a lightweight yet rigid material that adds stability to some Yonex badminton shoes without adding weight to them. It comes in various forms such as Power Graphite and 3D Power Carbon. They are placed under the arch area of the midsole to prevent it from twisting.

Round Sole

Another common feature found in Yonex badminton trainers is the Round Sole outsole. If you flip your shoes, you’ll notice that the edge of the outsole is not straight like those usually found in workout shoes. The edges are rounded. It allows the foot to quickly transition from one position to the next, regardless of which part of the outsole is in contact with the ground. The rounded edges are especially beneficial during side-to-side movements as the foot can smoothly roll inwards or outwards when needed.

Aside from the outsole’s sticky nature, a contributing factor to the outsole’s grip is the Hexagrip pattern. The tread layout supports multi-directional traction and flexibility. The unique design also allows the outsole to be 2% lighter compared to a solid rubber outsole.

Frequently asked questions

How much do badminton shoes from Yonex cost?

These trainers cost somewhere between $80 to $130. So, athletes have a choice between affordable footgear and more pricey ones. Low-priced Yonex badminton shoes are equipped with fewer technologies but still provide traction, stability, and comfort.

Other cheap badminton shoes can be obtained from Asics and Mizuno. However, you’d be pleased to know that you can get expensive shoes for as much as $30 off here at RunRepeat. Just click on a pair you like, and we’ll tap into our retail partners to get you the lowest possible deals.

Can I use running shoes to play badminton?

It is not advisable. Though Yonex running shoes are equipped with the same cushioning technologies as its badminton trainers, their construction is not the same. In general, running shoes are made to support forward movements; they keep the foot stable to ensure a smooth heel-to-toe transition. Meanwhile, badminton players move in different directions, so they need a shoe that does more than support forward steps.

What type of outsole do Yonex badminton shoes have?

These trainers employ a type of rubber that is grippy on smooth surfaces. Unlike outsoles of training shoes which are usually hard, the bottom layer of badminton shoes is soft. The soft nature of the material allows it to expand for better adhesion to the floor.

Is it okay to use my Yonex badminton trainers outside the court?

It is not recommended to use indoor shoes for streetwear for several reasons. First, you do not want to drag outside dirt or small rocks into the badminton court as they could ruin the floor. Second, the outsole of Yonex badminton shoes is softer compared to those used for outdoor footwear. So, using them outside can quickly deteriorate the outsole. Third, because the type of rubber used in these trainers is sticky, it can easily collect dust which affects its grip on indoor floors.

If you like wearing sporty trainers for everyday use, there are walking shoes from Skechers, Asics, and New Balance that fit the bill. They have a lace-up closure for that athletic-vibe, durable outsole, and a well-cushioned midsole.

On the other hand, if sporty and trendy is what you’re after, RunRepeat also has a massive collection of sneakers that may better suit you. You can choose from top sports brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok for their athletic-inspired offerings.

Is it hard to maintain Yonex badminton trainers?

If you only use it to play indoors, then your shoes would hardly get dirty. The only problem you’d probably face is if your feet excessively sweats, the inside could get stinky.

To solve this problem, you can remove the insole and wash/clean it according to the brand’s care instructions. This should already help with the odor. However, if the interior is still a bit smelly, there are shoe deodorizers available in the market that can also sterilize it to kill the odor-causing germs.

Store-bought deodorizes can be quite pricey, so here are some do-it-yourself tips that are easy on the pocket:

  • Unused tea bags can be placed inside each shoe overnight to absorb the smell.
  • Fill old socks with baking soda and stuff the tied socks inside the trainer. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer. Adding essential oils to the baking soda also helps freshen up your shoes.
  • Make a stink-away spray by mixing equal parts apple cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a small spray bottle. Spritz the inside of your footwear whenever it starts smelling off and allow it to dry overnight. Though the vinegar smell will go away on its own, adding essential oils to the solution could also help deal with that.
  •  If you have a cat and have kitty litter lying around, just put some in each shoe overnight and bump out the content before using them again. This stuff is very efficient in handling odor just ask any
  • Dryer sheets can also be used to remove the stink from trainers. Just stuff them inside each shoe or inside the shoe rack if you keep them there.

Bonus tip:

Wipe the outsole with a wet rag before and after a game. The damp cloth removes dust collected from the court, ensuring it stays grippy on the court.

When should I replace my Yonex badminton shoes?

The badminton community is divided on this issue. Some suggest replacing them after 7 to 9 months of regular use, while others claim a pair can last years. Since badminton trainers are not subjected to rough surfaces, they can indeed last for years. However, there are still other factors to consider like the cushioning and the fit of the upper.

If you feel like the outsole no longer has any grip even if after cleaning it with a damp cloth, it’s time to retire them. Other signs to watch out for are:

  • The midsole no longer absorbs shock, so your feet are sore after a game.
  • Your feet slide inside the footgear while playing.
  • The upper feels too loose and has lost lateral support.

Experiencing any of the above signs could mean its time to retire your kicks, even if you’ve only had them for a few months. Using damaged footwear can lead to injuries.

Are there hi-top badminton shoes from Yonex?

No, there are none. Badminton players move in all sorts of directions, and these movements help them strengthen their ankles. The low-top profile of badminton shoes allows them to freely move their ankles. High-tops shoes aim to provide ankle support, but they also impede movements. This artificial support can lead to ankle weakness.
