The Artica R5 is one of Fizik’s winter cycling shoes. It builds on the standard R5’s features by utilizing the same sole construction. However, this model’s upper is an entirely different story. It now features a Microtex shell lined with thermal materials making it water- and cold-proof.
A neoprene cuff keeps dirt at bay and comfortably snugs around the ankle. To maintain the winter-proof characteristic without sacrificing easy adjustability, Fizik utilized speed lacing with a zipper and a velcro for its closure.
Light and adequately stiff. This shoe employs a carbon-reinforced nylon sole. It provides efficient rigidity without adding unnecessary bulk and weight.
The Fizik Artica R5 features a three-bolt cleat design. Minimal markers are provided to make the positioning of cleats easier.
Try the following pedals to pair with this shoe: Speedplay Zero, Time Xpresso 6, and Shimano 5800.
Fully waterproof and structured. The shoe’s top part is crafted from Microtex reinforced shell. It is waterproof, while the insulation is provided by inner thermal linings. The materials also offer sleek aesthetics and, more importantly, are easy to clean.
Efficient lockdown. The Artica R5 employs three closure types to keep the foot warm, dry, and in place. The speed lacing system yields a snug fit without causing pressure points, while the zipper serves to keep the cold and elements at bay. Finally, the Velcro strap neoprene ankle cuff protects the top part of the foot.
Reflective detailing. Equipped with reflective materials, the shoe offers added safety measures essential for the unpredictable weather.
Winter edition insoles. The Artica R5 employs footbeds equipped with a cozy fleece upper and aluminum foil on the underside for the ultimate insulation.
To make sure water won’t seep through the ankle cuff, throw on a bib tight with zipped cuffs that closes over the ankle.
The brand has something to offer for every type of cyclist, including the brave all-year rider. For road riders who want to tough out the winter season, the Artica R5 is the choice. While mountain cyclists have the Artica X5.
Both shoes look very similar as they are employing almost the same materials. However, the X5 understandably displays a more aggressive and burlier silhouette. It also uses the traditional two-bolt mountain cleat system.
