- The Hoka One One Speedgoat 3 Waterproof was inspired by Karl Meltzer, an ultrarunner and ultrarunning coach who was dubbed as the "Speedgoat" for his speed records on major US trails. Just like him, the shoe was designed to conquer various types of technical trail with the added protection of a waterproof cleatie called the SkyShell.
- Typically, the space between the cleat and tongue, as well as the eyelets, can potentially be entrances for tiny objects or pebbles. To remedy this, the tongue was gusseted to further prevent tiny particles from entering the shoe.
- For added heel support and better mid-foot lockdown, a cage-like TPU overlay was added to the upper. The component creates a protective cradle. While it doesn't lock the foot down in place totally, it supports the foot sufficiently, delivering a ride that feels stable enough.
The waterproof version of the Speedgoat 3 is available in standard running shoe lengths. Runners who wish to get a pair can make use of their usual size preferences. The same goes for the width. It is available in the standard medium widths for men and women.
Hoka's Speedgoat 3 Waterproof has a Vibram outsole. This type of sole is made of the same material used for car tires. It was designed to deliver excellent grip on both wet and dry surfaces while maintaining a higher level of durability compared to standard rubber outsoles.
The lugs on the outsole measures 5mm. Each one acts like a tooth that sinks into different types of terrain or topographies for maximum grip. They are also multi-directional, further enhancing the grip that the Vibram sole provides.
The midsole is made up of two foams - EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) and CMEVA (Compression Molded EVA). Although both have different manufacturing processes, they work together to deliver lightweight and balanced cushioning.
Individually, the CMEVA is directly placed underneath the foot to absorb the impact upon landing. The EVA, on the other hand, was designed to be wider to provide the runner with a stable platform for a more efficient toe-off.
The upper is made up of open engineered mesh, a type of mesh material that has more structure compared to standard mesh. It delivers the feeling of security and support without compromising flexibility and ventilation. It permits the foot to move optimally while allowing air to circulate in and out of the shoe as the runner is in motion.
The waterproof version of the Speedgoat 3 has a wider toe box that complements the wideness of its platform. With more room available, the toes have enough space to naturally splay.
Inside is a waterproof cleatie called a SkyShell. This is the major component that keeps water out of the shoe. Runners don't have to worry about their foot getting wet while running through rain or accidentally stepping into puddles. Because it is a cleatie, it also keeps tiny debris out of the shoe while providing a fit that feels secure.
Each side of the tongue was connected to the shoe to eliminate potential entrances of tiny debris encountered on the trail. Because of the gusseted tongue, the likelihood of small objects getting into the shoe is lessened.
To further lock the heel and midfoot down, a seatbelt-like overlay made of thermoplastic polyurethane was added to both sides of the shoe. While it doesn't totally immobilize the structures it goes over, it does supply sufficient support and structural integrity to an upper that's flexible.
