7 Best Long Distance Running Shoes For Men in 2022

It takes mental and physical strength to run long distances. If you don’t have what it takes to endure the discomfort and stress of clocking big miles, you can just forget about becoming a long-distance runner. You can say the same thing about the shoes on your feet.

We have tested 100+ men’s long-distance running shoes to see which ones will make our best selections. Using a rigorous process, we put each pair of shoes to road tests on various training and racing conditions, and a lab test that cuts to the minutest details of each model.

Take a quick look at our best picks in five categories and find out which one fits your specific needs.

How we test running shoes

You don’t have to read 1000+ reviews on running shoes at RunRepeat. We streamline everything for you to save you the time and experience the convenience of choosing the right fit for your next 21K or 100K race. We gather all the necessary data we need utilizing a proven system we’ve developed over the years, which allows us to come up with the best options available.

Our entire process involves:

  • Buying the shoes with our own funds to avoid brand loyalty and bias
  • Logging 30 to 50 miles in each pair both on the road and off-road paths
  • Cutting the shoes into pieces (literally) to delve deeper into their essential parts
  • Measuring 30+ parameters that make the shoe’s overall performance
  • Collecting useful feedback from shoe experts, long-distance runners, and regular users
  • Summarizing everything into comparable data

To conclude the entire process, each shoe receives a final CoreScore rating. It is a number from 0 to 100 that shows how great (or not so great) each model is against all others.

Best Nike long distance running shoes for men

Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2
Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2

Corescore

91
Superb!
4.6 / 5 from 320 users
89 / 100 from 16 experts

Pros

  • Insanely lightweight
  • Very breathable
  • Bouncy
  • Responsive
  • FAST
  • No break-in period needed
  • Good grip on dry surfaces

Cons

  • Not ideal for wide feet
  • Unstable
  • Forefoot strikers only

Verdict

The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 is probably one of the fastest shoes on the market, but it has some problems that I think the majority of runners will agree with. It’s unstable, a bit too narrow still, looks ridiculous and hits the pocket book hard. If your job is to run fast, or you’re a sponsored athlete I think these shoes may be the tool to help you win, but for the average joe who wants to drop 2 minutes off their 5K time, it may be too much tech in a shoe designed for the 1% club.

A triathlon shoe, the Asics Noosa Tri 13 is a standalone that made our road runs fun and fast! It's comfortable enough for long days, it's agile for the speedier runs or races, and is equally perfect for short-distance efforts. Although very cushioned, we never felt any dragging. And like a true Asics, this shoe is built to last!

Best value long distance running shoes for men

Hoka One One Mach 4
Hoka One One Mach 4

Corescore

92
Superb!
4.6 / 5 from 8,554 users
94 / 100 from 28 experts

Pros

  • Glove-like fit
  • Perfect lockdown
  • Has an elf tab
  • Lightweight
  • Balanced
  • Superb comfort
  • Extremely stable
  • Large reflective elements

Cons

  • Stiff for an everyday trainer
  • Not a tempo shoe either
  • Break-in period needed

Verdict

The Hoka Mach 4 is what we consider a do-it-all daily running shoe that shines in medium to medium/fast days. It's touted as a fast shoe, but we didn't find it speed-inspiring. It's light and nimble, but not mushy, making it a shoe that's comfortable enough for daily runs and capable when the pace is pushed. What's surprising is that this Hoka doesn't skimp on padding, but it's one of our ultralight shoes!
