Reviews from around the internet
After six seasons in the league, Michael Jordan was already a well-decorated superstar. He has quickly ascended to become the NBA’s best player. However, one thing was still missing to solidify his greatness - the elusive Larry O'Brien trophy.
1991 saw the beginning of a storied Championship run. Gearing for the postseason that year, Michael Jordan laced up his Air Jordan 6.
While wearing his signature Air Jordan basketball shoes, he finally led his Chicago Bulls past the “Bad Boy” Detroit Pistons. After losing game one of the NBA Finals, they went on to defeat the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers and captured his very first NBA title and Finals MVP award.
Because of its rich legacy, the Air Jordan VI holds a special place in basketball and sneaker history. It has become a must-have for Jordan fans and sneaker collectors.
Aside from its on-court narrative, the Air Jordan 6 also introduced innovations such as a reinforced toe box, two holes in the tongue for easy on/off, and a molded heel tab with Achilles pillows for added protection.
Cushion. The Air Jordan VI has a PU foam midsole that provides lightweight cushioning. In the heel and forefoot, a visible and an encapsulated Nike Air unit offers enhanced responsiveness.
Traction. The outsole of the Air Jordan 6 features a combination of translucent and solid rubber that features a unique traction pattern for enhanced style and performance.
Lockdown. Aside from its traditional lace-up design, one of the innovations introduced in the Air Jordan IV is a molded heel tab with Achilles pillows for enhanced protection, comfort, and lockdown. A reinforced toe box was also incorporated to provide additional support around the forefoot area.
The Air Jordan 6 features a combination of genuine and synthetic leather for comfortable support. Perforations are strategically placed throughout the leather upper to offer breathability.
Crafted by legendary Jordan Brand designer Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 6’s exotic yet fierce silhouette draws inspiration from Michael Jordan’s Porsche 911. These vintage Air Jordan basketball shoes also feature an iconic color blocking that is recognizable up to this day.
Hatfield was determined to improve upon the Air Jordan 5 and brought Michael onboard the creative process. The molded heel tab, reinforced toe box, and two holes in the tongue were all added at Michael’s request.
The Air Jordan 6 has a unique appeal that separates itself from the rest of the Air Jordan line. It intertwines a classic design with a defining moment in basketball history.
The Air Jordan VI was originally launched in 1991 and was first retroed in 2000.

Air Jordan 6 Celebration Collection
To commemorate Michael Jordan’s six championships, Jordan Brand launched a special two-shoe set called the ‘celebration collection.’ According to Nike, “Big victories require big celebrations. Two unique Air Jordan 6 Retros pay a fitting tribute to the first of many with a unique ring lace toggle and a special graphic on the back heel to commemorate the six biggest victories of a storied career.”
Championships are celebrated with lit cigars and bubbling champagne. The Air Jordan 6 ‘Cigar’ boasts a raw umber upper with red accents while the ‘Champagne’ colorway is dressed in green with gold and glow detailing.
Air Jordan 6 Chinese New Year
Jordan Brand is welcoming the Lunar New Year with another special release that features bold graphics and embroidered details. The Air Jordan 6 Chinese New Year is made of black nubuck and taffeta fabric to deliver a premium look and feel. Contrasting the black upper are metallic gold accents, brilliant fireworks, exploding colors, and seasonal flowers.
Air Jordan 6 ‘Like Mike’
To pay tribute to the famous 1991 “Like Mike” commercial, Jordan Brand and Gatorade collaborated to create a unique colorway for the Air Jordan 6.
The Like Mike colorway comes in Gatorade orange and green. Its color blocking is reminiscent of the Carmine colorway Michael Jordan used in the commercial. Other Gatorade-inspired details include a squeeze-bottle-looking lace lock, a lightning sockliner graphic, and the phrase “If I Could Be” embroidered on the inside of the tongue.
Air Jordan 6 Retro Doernbecher
In 2009, 12-year-old Jordan Dark was selected to participate in the Nike X Doernbecher Freestyle Project. Inspired by his school colors, the Air Jordan 6 Retro Doernbecher is dressed in tonal navy with red accents. “06/08” is impressed on the side panel, marking the date he received his final treatment.
In an interview, Nick DePaula asked Jordan about the other design details seen on the shoe. “My favorite detail is that on the left shoe it says ‘What time is it?’ and on the right shoe it says ‘Game time!’ That's what the Bulls would say each and every game, so it's pretty classic. I'm sure everybody has said it in their lifetime.”
Air Jordan 6 Retro ‘Slam Dunk’
This colorway takes inspiration from a Japanese manga about a high school basketball team. With over $120 million copies sold, Slam Dunk is one of the world’s best selling mangas. Hanamichi Sakuragi, the main character, wears the number 10 on his Bulls-inspired jersey. The AJ 6 Retro ‘Slam Dunk’ boasts a red nubuck upper with a unique manga-inspired graphic.
Air Jordan 6 Spiz’ike ‘History of Jordan’
The Air Jordan 6 Spiz’ike commemorates Spike Lee’s contribution to the Air Jordan line. Taking inspiration from the OG Spiz’ike, the ‘History of Jordan’ features a red leather upper with green and black accents. A white midsole on top of an icy blue outsole finishes off the shoe’s silhouette.
