Because of his strong background in making shoes, Karl Toosbuy had a dream of running his shoe factory. In 1963, his vision came to life when he founded the Ecco brand in Denmark. The initial production of the brand was exclusively offered for women and in limited amounts.

However, it wasn't until in the 1970s that the company found its big brand when designer  Ejnar Truelsen, created the model "Joke," which pioneered the brand's other successful sneakers. By 1974, the brand opened its business internationally and established different factories across Asia, Canada, Europe, and the United States.
