The Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit is designed to be a more lightweight and well-rounded shoe compared with the other Metcons. It is made with CrossFit in mind, making it perfect for box jumps, short runs, and other plyometric and cardio-focused exercises. It also aims to give enough support for moderate weightlifting although Nike had to sacrifice some of its steadiness to make it a Jack-of-All-Trades shoe.
Its design shares the iconic look with the previous Metcons, but has its own flair due to the new Flyknit upper. It is a breathable, stretchy yet snug material that is meant to provide a sock-like fit. An even more sock-like upper design is found in the second iteration of the shoe, the Metcon DSX Flyknit 2.
The outsole of the Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit has a strong grip due to its sticky rubber compound. Nike retained the textured treading that was prominent in the Nike Metcon 3. Another inherited feature is the textured rubber wrap that protects the midfoot from abrasion during rope climbing.
The Metcon DSX Flyknit also comes with a firm removable midsole with a 6-mm drop (a 2-mm increase from the Nike Metcon 3). It is a dual-density component which is firmer in the heel section for stability and softer in the forefoot for flexibility.
The upper unit features the innovative Flyknit technology. It is a stretchy, supportive, and breathable material that aims to give a snug yet comfortable fit.
It is also coupled with eyelets made from strong Flywire cables to ensure that the foot is locked in place no matter how dynamic the movements are.
A firm yet lightweight TPU heel counter sits on the back of the shoe. It helps in preventing the foot from wobbling and maintaining steadiness when lifting weights.
