We spent 10 hours reading reviews from experts and users. In summary, this is what basketball players think:

8 reasons to buy

  • The Nike Hyperdunk X’s traction is pretty effective and extremely reliable, most testers comment.
  • These Nike basketball shoes have fantastic cushioning, almost all reviewers exclaim. The Zoom Air cushioning feels quick, bouncy, and it also offers phenomenal impact protection.
  • The materials are pretty nice, a good number remark. It is comfortable, supportive, and does not require any breaking-in.
  • Nearly all reviewers report that these mid-top basketball shoes fit true to size. They are also stating that the Hyperdunk X fits like a glove and can accommodate any foot shape.
  • A good number of testers note that these widely praised Nike basketball shoes also provide excellent support. They claim that there is no heel slippage and side-to-side movement.
  • The TPU wing does an excellent job of containing the foot, several players observe.
  • A couple of reviewers point out that the widely spaced lacing system delivers enhanced lockdown.
  • The step-in comfort is just incredible, a user describes.

7 reasons not to buy

  • According to a small number of testers, the Nike Hyperdunk 2018’s traction loses its grip on dusty courts.
  • Several reviewers are reporting that the Nike Hyperdunk 2017 has better materials than the Hyperdunk X.
  • These Nike basketball shoes run narrow at the forefoot, a few wearers claim.
  • The cushioning could have been better, a handful of players gripe.
  • A tester gripes that these mid-top basketball shoes are a pain to put on.
  • Some wearers warn that the heel and collar area are very firm. They are reporting of having terrible cuts and blisters after playing in these mid-top basketball shoes.
  • Most testers are reporting that the rubber outsole is pretty soft. They do not recommend the Nike Hyperdunk X for outdoor play.

Bottom line

Nike went back to basics with the 2018 version of the Hyperdunk line. However, since this is the 10th-anniversary model of the Hyperdunk series, testers are quick to point out that Nike could have done a better job with the Hyperdunk X. Nevertheless, most reviewers are still quite satisfied with the shoe’s on-court performance and recommend grabbing a pair.

There are other models that perform slightly better, but they are also at a higher price point.

If you need a dependable shoe for any indoor surface, with great cushioning, a semi-durable upper, and killer fit, look no further. The Hyperdunk X achieved what Nike always looks for in the shoe: it works. It isn’t flashy (although I like the way it looks) and it gets the job done. From high-flying wings to quick guards to mobile big men, the Hyperdunk X is your slide. There isn’t much else to say — it’s a great shoe for every player you will ever be.

This version of the HD was so close to being perfect but I really wanted the traction and containment to be better. The fit is amazing right out of the box and I really loved the cushioning as well. The HD X is just a jack of all trades per usual which I really love.

From the Hyperdunk 2011 to the 2013, the performance was pretty awesome. The 2016 and 2017 was pretty good as well. However, the 2018 model was just subpar. With the hype of it being the 10th shoe of the line and all the advertisements, you would have expected something exceptional. Nike can really step up seeing that it has come out with so many good Hyperdunks before so they really have to manage this inconsistency to prevent the downfall in Nike’s “most reliable” team model.

When you lace-up a pair of ball shoes before the match and then completely forget about them even existing on your feet the first second you step on-court, letting only basketball control your mind & body – that’s my definition of a well-made basketball sneaker. And the HP ’18 was exactly IT. There’s no gimmicks… Just pure performance… If that’s what you need – I wouldn’t look any further than that.
