Reviews from around the internet
Fila Ray Tracers come in men’s and women’s sizes, which is fortunate because these shoes should be enjoyed by all.
The sockliners and tongues of these shoes are amply padded, and the shoes conform to the foot. There is enough support for physical activities like brisk walking and aerobics.
Hiker cord laces and six pairs of eyelets make up the closure lacing system. The uppers sit on substantial EVA midsoles, while well-padded sockliners keep the feet extremely cushioned for long periods on your feet.
Heavily-inspired by Fila’s 90’s archives, especially the chunky 90s midsoles and layered uppers, these shoes exude a definite retro vibe. The three-fabric uppers, combined with the shoes’ wavy patterns and color-blocking design, give them a dynamic and powerful look.
Fila Ray Tracer vs. Fila Luminance
Some people have compared the Fila Ray Tracer with the brand’s Luminance model. At first look, the two shoes have a lot of similarity between them. Both feature striking color-block patterns, both have a mixture of suede, mesh, and leather materials, both use hiker cord laces, and both have that same bulky frame. However, when you look more closely, you’ll see some differences.
Fila Luminance shoes use a combination of ghillie and eyelet lacing system. The ghillie at the bottom part transitions to an eyelet lacing system near the middle. The laces are set a bit farther up on the shoes compared to the Ray Tracer ones.
Fila Ray Tracer sneakers also have a rounder look compared to the slightly sleeker—but still very much bulky—shape of the Luminance kicks.
Fila Ray Tracer on feet styles
Running out of ideas on how to style your chunky kicks other than with jeans? Here are some examples of somewhat unconventional ensembles with your Ray Tracers.
- Accessorize a classic trench coat with slim pants and these Fila kicks on your feet.
- Wear with a casual short knit dress and a more formal coat on top.
- Don a very feminine tonal long silk dress and accessorize with your Ray Tracer shoes.
- Pair chinos, a fleece-lined denim jacket, and a casual tee with these Fila shoes.
- Your casual outfit of joggers, t-shirt, and these sneakers are elevated with the use of a blazer on top.
- Match your sneakers with loose black pants, a crisp white band collar shirt, and a black leather jacket.
Fila Ray Tracer shoes do not come with modern tech features of any sort, but that’s alright. These shoes are strictly old school, from the retro styling down to the interior details.
Make no mistake. Old school here doesn’t mean uncomfortable. Far from it. These kicks are so cushioned that they “should be your go-tos for active days when you know you’ll be on your feet a lot,” as one user put it.
The use of colors is also striking. The four to five shades in each colorway blend together to give the shoes a very commanding presence. No shy colors here. These hues are meant to lead the eyes down to your kicks and make them stay there. For quite some time.
Fila has been enjoying immense success lately by releasing heritage-inspired sneakers from the 90s with a very on-trend chunky styling. It seems that lately, Fila could do no wrong. But it hasn’t always been this way.
In the 90s, the brand reigned supreme, especially among basketball fans. The company’s endorser was popular NBA star Grant Hill, and famous rapper Tupac was seen rocking his Fila Grant Hill 2s in the booklet of his album, All Eyez on Me. Everyone wanted a Fila.
However, the Italian brand overextended itself. It spent far too much on sports endorsements while the 90s aesthetics it was known for was slowly being replaced by the sleeker, less chunky profiles produced by other brands.
Fila lost its footing and dropped out of mainstream consciousness. At least when it came to sneakers.
In the year 2007, Fila Korea set about correcting this error by acquiring the rights to the global Fila brand and realigning the company’s priorities. The business also focused on strengthening its heritage division, which turned out to be the right move because in the years 2014 to now, the sales in that division has doubled.
The Fila Ray Tracer silhouette
In the fall of 2018, Fila released yet another model banking on the current bulky shoe craze. Although a new design, the style is derived from its archives which heavily influenced the shoes’ uppers and midsoles.
This model quickly became a fan favorite. New colorways kept dropping including a recent one on March 27, 2019, which had a more subdued shade than the previous ones. The uppers of this new colorway were done all in white with only the two-toned laces and the midsoles providing some color contrast.
Fila also used the Ray Tracer profile to create a new silhouette that it called, Fila Disruptor 2 x Ray Tracer. The new shoes took on the midsoles of Ray Tracers and the uppers of another famous Fila model, the Disruptor 2.
- Fila Ray Tracers come in white/black/red, grey/black/blue, white/blue/purple, and more.
