-This winter hiking boot from Columbia is made of textile and leather upper for durability, Techlite midsole for lasting comfort, and Omni-Grip non-marking sole for enhanced grip and traction.
-The Fairbanks 1006 is rated -25F/-32C. It's equipped with 200 grams of lightweight insulation, a waterproof membrane, and the Omni-Heat reflective lining that keeps the feet warm and dry when the cold weather strikes.
-Its upper is constructed using leather and textile materials for enhanced durability.
With a shaft height that goes well above the ankle, this boot offers plenty of coverage, support, and protection for the foot. The textile fabric wraps the foot inside for a snug fit while the padded tongue and collar create a plush and comfortable shoe environment. The Fairbanks 1006 is tied up using a traditional lacing system. There's a pull loop at the back of the collar for easy slip-on-and-off.
For this model, Columbia used its advanced traction outsole made of specially formulated rubber compounds for durability. It's designed to grip rock, loose dirt, and gravel. The rectangular lugs throughout the sole prevent slipping on slick or wet surfaces. The Omni Grip sole also features a water solution characterized by two zones of siping which at the same time, help keep the shoe stable on uneven ground.
Despite being a winter boot, the Columbia Fairbanks 1006 stays relatively lightweight. Thanks to the Techlite EVA midsole that offers superb cushioning without the added bulk. This propriety midsole is known for its enhanced cushioning and high bounce rate. It also absorbs impact well, which makes walking on the trail more efficient and less tiring.
Categorized as a winter boot, the Fairbanks 1006 packs plenty of features to keep the feet warm and dry. First is the Omni Tech waterproof bootie construction wherein the membrane is seam-sealed, creating a sock-like liner that protects the foot from external moisture. Second is the 200g insulation called Omni-HEAT which was also developed by Columbia.
Furthermore, this shoe incorporates a reflective lining that looks like silver dots. It works by reflecting the heat generated by the body so the feet stay warm and cozy. Completing the upper is a lace-up closure for a secure, adjustable fit every time.
-200-gram insulation doesn't mean there's 200 grams of insulation in the boot, as it's a massive amount and will make the footwear a lot heavier. It means that one square meter of the insulating material used weighs 200 grams. Boots with this type of insulation are warm enough to walk comfortably outside, in the town, or stay active.
-If hiking in very cold climates, such as when snowshoeing, it's best to wear boots with more insulation, e.g. 400 grams.
