Comme des Garcons x NikeLab VaporMax History

Nike Air technology has been in existence for close to four decades ever since it was introduced in the Nike Air Tailwind in 1978. But it was the first Air Max that came out in 1987 that highlighted its significance in providing reliable air cushioning.

Air cushioning, more than 30 years later, has been elevated with Nike’s most advanced shoe. With its clean looks, the VaporMax is an unusual mixture of performance and style. Nike designers took more than 15 tries to perfect the unique VaporMax sole. The story of the cutting edge design started in 2010 when company designers led by Nike cushioning innovation designer Zach Elder worked on a whole new air-cushioning material. This air cushioning was further developed by Nike footwear innovation designer Tom Minami with a team of engineers and designers.

The VaporMax designers wanted to go back to the original promise of Air cushioning that gives wearers that feeling of walking on air or floating like a cloud. Minami said the goal of the new air cushioning is to remove the midsole and outsole to make wearers feel the benefits of  Nike Air cushioning directly. To achieve it, the airbag was developed to bounce like a trampoline and make it feel like it is pistoning feeling the air pressure underneath.  From the 1987 Air Max to the 2017 VaporMax, designers claimed this completed the air cushioning system and a significant turning point for the company.

According to designers, while the older Air Max models tend to fill the bubble with air, VaporMax uses it efficiently with less air. They also used pressure maps of the foot as a basis on where to efficiently place air to support a runner’s stride. The result is a tread pattern that resembles that of pistons. Furthering the concept of floating on air, designers led by Minami came up with a translucent sole to make a visual image that wearers are floating. A Flyknit upper also adds to the overall light feeling when wearing the shoe.

This same principle was introduced in the recent collaboration with Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. The Tokyo-based fashion label has been collaborating with Nike for more than two decades.  Since 1999, Kawakubo and the rest of her team have been churning out unique designs initially intended for the Japanese market but later on to the rest of the world.

The first design collaborations were led by designer Junya Watanabe with the Nike Zoom Haven. Other collaborations include tweaks on the Nike Super Fly, Nike Waffle Racer, Nike Vandal, and Nike Dunk. In-house brand Dover Street Market also came up with design collabs on the iconic Nike Air Force One, Nike Tennis Classic, Air Jordan I, and the Nike Roshe Daybreak.  

Soon other iconic Nike shoes were worked in partnership with Comme Des Garcons main brand that includes the Nike Lunar Epic Flyknit, Nike Air Force I Low, Nike Dunk High, Nike Air Pegasus 83, Nike Air Moc, and the Nike VaporMax. The Comme Des Garcons x NikeLab VaporMax collaboration made its debut in February 2017 in Paris at CDG’s Spring 2017 runway show.  This particular collaboration with the Japanese fashion label is one of the bestselling shoes in the market as pairs of the limited edition sneakers are always sold out, which is an evident sign of continued excitement among sneaker collectors and avid footwear fans.

Comme des Garcons x NikeLab VaporMax Style

Japanese fashion label Commes Des Garcons’ minimalist treatment for the popular VaporMax had a fantastic welcome at the Spring 2017 runway show in February 2017. The monochromatic color scheme of dominating black and white colorways and touches of minimalism on the upper were all reflected in the design that every sneaker aficionado seemed to want to cop a pair. As a result, the already limited edition shoes immediately sold out with only a few retailers selling them.

The high demand prompted Nike to release the limited edition kicks on Air Max Day.

As to the overall design of the shoe, many sneaker fans including resellers and diehard collectors of the Max Air shoes have high regard for this stylish take on the Vapormax silhouette. The Comme des Garcons x NikeLab VaporMax shoe collaboration has a tighter fit compared to the regular VaporMax because of the slip-on design. However, the shoe continues to run right to size. The pump is available in sizes men and women retaining the size range of regular VaporMax shoes. Shoe size for the CDG and NikeLab collaboration ranges from US size 6 to 14 for men and size 5 to 12 for women.

The VaporMax sole takes the Air Max to a whole new level by getting the most out of air cushioning and eliminating the bulky foam midsole with the thick and durable air bubble that maintains its elasticity and structural form. The result is an incredibly lightweight sole that feels like walking on air, thus, reducing fatigue and with the firmness that doesn’t easily get punctured.

Also notable is the footwear's use of premium Flyknit material in the upper with Nike Swoosh details and CDG branding on the tongue. Flyknit is a revolutionary material because of its durability. It also reduces waste by as much as 60 percent compared to the regular cut-sew process of manufacturing footwear. The technology also takes pride in decreasing shoe weight by as much as two ounces compared to the traditional cut-sew method.
