The Field Trekker Mid by Timberland is technically a man’s boot but can be worn by women who prefer a sporty type of hiking footwear. It’s a mid-top variant with a standard width. The leather upper holds the foot securely while adapting to its shape.
This boot uses a traditional lace-up closure system, featuring rustproof, speed lace hardware to facilitate easy adjustment of the fit.
Timberland makes its own outsoles using a company-exclusive rubber compound that is said to contain recycled materials, particularly old tires.
The outsole is attached to the shoe through a direct injection process. This results in a durable sole that has precise lug shapes and spacing. It also creates a durable, waterproof outsole that is highly resistant to wear.
The Field Trekker sole has flatter treads for smoother transitions on pavements. Meanwhile, the lugs aren’t too deep so the shoe doesn’t feel uncomfortable on flat and hard surfaces, such as city streets or interior floors.
The Field Trekker Mid features a midsole made of EVA foam which is lightweight, flexible, and durable. EVA is a commonly used material for performance footwear. It has a soft texture but is pliable enough to support varying foot movements.
EVA is also present in other lightweight hiking shoes and boots. The reason why it’s so light is that it’s made of thousands of tiny pores or bubbles joined together to hold air. This structure also gives the midsole a high level of shock-absorption quality.
Included in the Field Trekker mid-top hiker is an OrthoLite footbed for added comfort and support.
This boot is made of premium Suede leather sourced from a Silver-rated tannery. All parts of the upper are stitched together for strength and durability. It also features a rand - a thin layer of rubber that wraps around the toe area. Aside from protecting the toes from sharp hazards on the trail, the rand also protects the stitching around the upper.
Completing the upper is a rustproof, speed lace hardware. There are lace hooks on top so you can conveniently adjust the fit and tightness around the ankle.
Timberland has been crafting high-quality footwear since 1952. They offer different shoes for different outdoor conditions. Among their most popular footwear products are the Field Trekker and the Euro Hiker. Each of these has unique features, use, and functionality.
Materials. The Euro hiker features an upper made of full-grain leather and Cordura nylon which offer a high level of resistance to abrasion, wear and tear. Compared with the Field Trekker, the Euro Hiker boots tend to be more resilient in tough to severe weather conditions. The mesh fabric also provides some breathability to the shoe, which is important when hiking in hot to humid environments.
Traction. Specifically designed for hiking, the Euro Hiker features a sturdy outsole with aggressive lugs for traction. The multidirectional lugs on the center part of the outsole ensure a strong grip on soft surfaces, such as muddy ground or wet grass. Note, however, that aggressive lugs may cause a little discomfort on the foot when walking on concrete (e.g. roads or pavements). Thus, if you’re normally on the streets or if you’re looking for a pair of shoes that you can take on the trail but will most likely be using for work and casual activities more often, the Field Trekker might be a better choice.
- The Timberland Field Trekker also comes in a low-cut version. It has all the features of the mid-top model but it provides more freedom of movement in the ankle, which is ideal for experienced hikers or people who don’t require a lot of ankle support.
- This model has a waterproof variant as well called “Field Trekker WP”. It features the TimberDry waterproof membrane made of 50% recycled plastic bottles. In addition, it is equipped with 200 grams of Primaloft insulation and the SensorFlex technology for underfoot support. The Timberland Field Trekker waterproof boots are great for day hiking in the winter.
