The Phantom 8000 is the durable workhorse of Scarpa’s extreme cold mountaineering line.
Triple lined with inner boot, plastic shell and built-in overboot, they did get me to the top of Manaslu last year, but my gloveless summit photo indicates the cold wasn’t so extreme that day.
- The Scarpa Phantom 8000 is a double-boot designed for mountaineers tackling high altitudes and cold environments. The gaiter, which is unified with the boot, is made of Schoeller, Cordura, and Kevlar. The outer boot uses a combination of K-Tech, S-Tech, and Super Fabric with OutDry technology to make it sturdy and waterproof. The ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) inner boot is equipped with Primaloft 400 for insulation.
- Cushioning and support are handled by the boots’ dual-density ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) midsole. Its Vibram Zero Gravity Lite outsole is engineered to grip on challenging surfaces and maintain performance in cold temperatures.
The Phantom 8000 from Scarpa is a unisex mountaineering double boot that’s available in whole and half sizes. It comes in standard width and generally runs true to size. The outer shell is built on the AC last which grants optimum circulation in high-altitude conditions. The inner boot has a climbing-specific toe shaping, a forefoot shape that delivers a precise fit, and a heel area that creates a firm heel hold. Based on Scarpa’s sizing guide, female mountaineers are recommended to go one size down to get the correct fit.
The Scarpa Phantom 8000 features a Vibram Zero Gravity Lite Outsole that delivers traction in challenging environments. Its surface is filled with multi-directional lugs that bite into various types of surfaces. Also, the outsole incorporates a slightly-raised heel design to improve braking in downhill conditions.
Cushioning and support are primarily supplied by the Scarpa Phantom 8000’s dual-density microporous EVA midsole. Its design incorporates TPU welts that allow the attachment of automatic and semi-automatic crampons.
The gear’s insole is made of a combination of EVA and carbon fiber which grants underfoot protection and durability. The boot’s reflective aluminum footbed promotes insulation. It’s also coated with Cocona, a moisture management technology that combats odor-causing agents.
This mountaineering boot’s upper consists of three parts – a gaiter, outer boot, and inner boot. The gaiter uses a combination of Schoeller, Cordura, and Kevlar. These materials imbue the gear with durability and resistance to abrasion. Moreover, the gaiter’s Flexseal zip closure system achieves a secure lockdown.
The Scarpa Phantom 8000’s outer boot is made of K-Tech, S-Tech Fabric, and Super Fabric to make it sturdy. An Outdry membrane is lined to make it waterproof. The footwear’s multi-layer EVA inner boot features Primaloft 400 for insulation. It has velcro straps to lock the user’s foot in.
