Nike Zoom D Track Spikes: How do they perform?More photos
The Nike Zoom D is a Nike entry-level distance track running spike. I have run multiple races in these and many workouts in these. The races were anywhere from 800m-3200m and workouts anywhere from 200m intervals to mile repeats.
I could say this spike is good for runners who have a decent amount to many experiences with spikes, but I wouldn't exactly call it entry-level. It is a good, average track spike but nothing too exciting.
In terms of looks, this spike has a very simplistic design with multiple colorways. I purchased the all white with the black logo colorway. The spike, in my opinion, does have a cheap look and feel to it, but it gets the job done.
In terms of the midsole, there isn’t much to say because it’s a track spike and isn’t meant to have a lot to the midsole.
But with the midsole that there is, there isn’t anything too impressive but does the job well. It is a full-length Cushlon foam. The Cushlon provides more heel cushioning, and it is responsive.
The overall ride of this spike is well, but there was not anything aggressive about it, it just felt like an average spike. As I stated before, it did well for distances from 800m-3200m races and felt fine in almost any workout.
The breathability of this spike was fine as it should be for its purpose. The spike has an engineered mesh upper that holds the midfoot area secure while also being breathable. It did have a very basic engineered mesh upper and got the job done.
The flexibility of this spike was very good as it should be for a long distance spike. The spike plate is set strategically on the outsole so that it has prestige flexibility.
In terms of comfort, this spike had the right amount of comfort once it finally got broken in. It did take a couple of races and workouts for it to get broken in. But, once it did, it felt perfect.
Although for me, after any race, my feet felt terrible and were definitely sore after racing, and were never left feeling good.
The price of this spike when it came out is $90, which is a little expensive for the spikes, in my opinion. I would put them around the $75-80 range, but the spikes do well, and the $90 isn't too crazy.
In terms of traction, this shoe had a pretty good grip on the track. The Pebax spike plate had a great grip even when the track was wet or flooded.
The plate isn’t as aggressive or well-engineered as the higher costing spikes such as the Victory 3, but it still has a little pop and does fine.
It also features a Sharkskin heel pad that goes from the midfoot to the heel area, which also adds more grip to the spike.
In conclusion, the spikes are a good average and will definitely get the job done. The shoe does have a basic feel and basic look to it, but it provides good cushioning, flexibility, and breathability. For $90, it's worth it and will not disappoint.
A lot more flexibility to the shoe, the grip is really nice, super good cushioning in the heel which gives especially for novice runners who aren't able to stay up on the ball of the foot, nice cushioning protection. The upper is also retooled, and so come on in try the new rival D at fleet feet you'll be really pleased that you did.
With its designed midsole for cushioning, it helps protect the foot from constant impact from the track.
Anatomically lasted to fit the natural shape of the foot, the Zoom D offers more space in the forefoot than some others.
Designed to meet the needs of Middle to Long distance Athletes competing in track events ranging from 800m up to 10,000m, the new Nike Zoom D track spikes are a spectacularly well designed piece of kit and if this is an omen of what we can expect from Nike this coming summer season, we await with eager anticipation!
Use - The Nike Zoom D is a versatile medium to long-distance track spike that is ideal for a wide range of runners, from beginning High School track racers to experienced athletes competing in 1500 m to 10k m events.
Spike Type - The track shoe comes with five removable 1/4 inch Pyramid spikes that deliver optimal grip support on the track for propulsion.
Spike Plate - The Zoom D utilizes a five-pin Pebax midfoot plate that has a split plate design. This offers excellent traction as well as a smooth transition.
The Nike Zoom D is explicitly designed for athletes who race middle to long-distance races. Powered by Nike's Cushlon midsole technology, it provides responsive cushioning. It is similar to Phylon rubber but made with higher fiber content making it softer and resilient.
The shoe uses a 5-pin Pebax plate with a split-plate design. It decouples down the forefoot to better promote smooth transitions during runs. It also provides optimal traction that proves very helpful in propelling the runner forward.
The Zoom D is fitted with an engineered mesh upper which provides targeted breathability and support. This engineered mesh upper also wraps the foot snugly for a better fit.
Lastly, the engineered mesh upper work with the no-sew overlays in the midfoot area for enhanced midfoot support and seam-free comfortable fit.
The Nike Zoom D has been released in the market as a unisex-style shoe that follows the standard sizing scheme. Since it is sold in men's sizes, women are recommended to get the shoe in 1.5 sizes below their standard running shoe size. The shoe's anatomical toe shape allows room for a spacious and comfortable fit.
The Zoom D's outsole uses the Pebax spike plate with split-plate design. It is computer-designed to have geometrical cut-outs that help reduce weight and deliver more stiffness and flexibility where needed. The Pebax spike plate does not only provide optimum traction, but it also maximizes propulsion for a smoother toe-off. The Pebax spike plate is also found in other track shoes from Nike, such as the Zoom 400.
Working with the Pebax spike plate are five removable pyramid spikes that deliver excellent propulsion. These pyramid spikes line the perimeter of the forefoot while the spike plate ends just behind the ball of the runner's foot to maximize flexibility.
The shoe's outsole is also fitted with a thin rubber layer that covers the heel and the midfoot. It offers additional durability and accommodates the impact of the footstrike.
Lastly, the Nike Zoom D incorporates a Sharkskin heel pad that extends from the midfoot to the heel area. It is a thermoplastic grid-like feature that helps reduce the shoe's overall weight, and it also enhances the shoe's grip and traction.
The shoe's midsole is fitted with the Cushlon foam. It is a full-length foam material that is similar to Phylon but made with an even higher rubber content. Thus, making the Cushlon foam more lightweight and softer yet also resilient. And just like the play on its name, the Cushlon provides more heel cushioning, and it is more responsive compared to what is found in most spikes in the market.
Lastly, the shoe's midsole area also features a padded heel collar that cradles the heel comfortably.
The Nike Zoom D was designed with an engineered mesh upper that comfortably hugs the midfoot area while also being as breathable as possible. It also helps with the shoe being lightweight and snug.
The Nike Zoom D also has an arch band that is sculpted to support the underside of the arch. It is shaped straighter than most spikes, providing more material below the midfoot area and also ample width under the ball of the foot.
Around the arch band is a single-layer mesh that helps keep the foot cool by helping regulate the foot's temperature inside the shoe.
The shoe also no-sew overlays that add support to the heel and are strategically placed for increased flexibility, durability, and secure fit.
