The Nike PG series is a story of commitment to progress. Through nine seasons, the veteran All-Star continues to aspire to become a better version of himself. “As I see myself getting older in this league, the question I ask myself is, ‘How can I become a more efficient athlete?’ I need to perform at the elite level I know I’ve reached, but without wasting excess energy,” George explains.
To help George reach another level on the court, Nike designer Tony Hardman focused on three principles:
- Shed What Is Unnecessary
- Make Every Step Matter
- Remember Where You Came From
The Nike PG3 features a ½-bootie construction, ripstop collar, lighter foam midsole, and a circular traction pattern. “Reducing the weight suits his style of play. He’ll set and pop from three off of his forefoot, and he’s doing a lot of cutting and slashing from the balls of his feet, both offensively and defensively,” Hardman explains. “That softer midsole foam and the forefoot Zoom Bag help him to generate more speed.”
Cushion. For enhanced responsiveness, these Paul George basketball shoes are equipped with a lighter foam midsole paired with the same forefoot Zoom Air bag used in the Nike PG2. According to George, he gets more response out of this new cushioning setup.
Traction. Inspired by Moon craters, these Nike basketball shoes feature a circular traction pattern for increased multidirectional grip. This innovative traction pattern delivers a distinct aesthetic and enables George to cut and slash in any direction.
Length and Width. Testers are reporting that the Nike PG 3 fits true to size but feels snug at the forefoot. Because of this, wide-footers are advised to try the shoes in-store if they can.
Lockdown. These Paul George basketball shoes feature a ½-bootie construction that creates a secure and snug fit. Across the forefoot, free-floating synthetic wings further lock in the foot. “When you don’t need to fuse or laminate those support elements, you can keep the upper softer and sock-like,” Hardman says. “That’s what the forefoot wings do. The upper can work underneath, but the wings still lock you in.”
To reduce the shoe’s overall weight, the PG3’s upper features a combination of mesh and synthetics. The shoe’s tongue is also integrated into the rip-stop collar to provide support without sacrificing agility.
Paul George’s personal connections run deep in the Nike PG3’s DNA. The outsole features several numbers that trace back to his past. His birthday, jersey numbers, number of tattoos, among others can be found inside the circular traction pattern.
