The Ion Rascal's soles are plenty stiff without compromising comfort. It is also grippy and keeps my feet dry and warm on a fairly cold ride. They were easy to clean, and they look good enough that I wouldn’t mind wearing them to the bar afterward. I rode in the rain with these shoes, and it took three full days of the shoes sitting against my heater for them to completely dry. I also found the Serpen_Tie strap a bit too long for my narrow feet. I was not able to fully tighten the strap and still have its hook-and-loop pieces overlap, which meant I had to leave the strap looser than I would have liked. Fortunately, the laces were plenty tight so this didn’t make any difference. Again, I have particularly flat and narrow feet, so this should not be an issue for most riders.

I can honestly say, I’ve had a blast riding in the ION Rascal shoes. At no point did I have to think about them during a ride, which is usually a good indicator that they’re doing their job. The additional protection around the toe, heel and inside ankle certainly provides a reassuring confidence that while your foot is nested within its grasp, you’re in safe hands. Walking around in these shoes felt comfortable just as much as riding in them, as they provide ample grip and a trainer-like feel. The only things I didn’t like about the ION Rascal shoes are, perhaps, more of a personal preference. For starters, the platform sole not only seems a little tall but also gives the shoe a chunky aesthetic which isn’t particularly flattering. On the blue colour model, there’s almost too much blue and when coupled which a chunky sole, I can only liken them to Lego bricks. However, despite their look, they’re great performers! Incorporating a number of useful features – except being waterproof – the Rascal clipless shoes form ION Sports failed to disappoint.

Releasing one of the most capable mountain bike footwear for trail and enduro riders, Ion has developed the Rascal for endless trail rides. This model is the brand’s only clipless shoe and is designed mainly for downhillers, but some consider it as an all-rounder.

This shoe’s construction was based on the SupTraction Rubber Soul CL (Clipless). This feature delivers efficient pedaling efficiency due to its longitudinal stiffness and lateral flex. The lockdown is governed by the combination of traditional laces and the brand’s signature Serpen Tie.

Up above, impacts from rocks and stubs are fended off by the pair’s injected toe cap, while bike bumps to your ankles are a thing of the past thanks to the Asymmetric ankle pads. The shoe’s upper is made from 74% textile and 26% synthetic material, while the lining is 100% Polyester.

Rigidity with flex. The Ion Rascal MTB shoe’s soles are made from the brand’s SupTraction Rubber Soul CL design. It combines stiffness via the longitudinal axis and flexibility via the lateral axis. The outsole is made from rubber while the midsole is crafted from 70% Ethyl Vinyl Acetate and 30% Thermoplastic Polyutherane

Grip. The rubber sole offers traction for off-bike use. The rider stays upright in slippery trails whenever they need to dismount and push their bike.

The Ion Rascal clipless shoe employs the traditional 2-bolt cleat design. Some of the clipless MTB pedals that are suitable for this model are DMT Vault Brendog Ice, Nukeproof Horizon Pro Sam Hill, and Superstar Nano-x EVO.

The cleat area is recessed into the sole to keep walking natural and comfortable.

Excellent impact protection. The shoe features the brand’s Toetal Protection technology and a pre-shaped heel for optimal safeguard against impacts. The Toetal Protection is the reinforced toe cap area that absorbs and deflects force from rock hits.

The pre-shaped heels foster excellent comfort and precise fit to keep the heel in place. Lastly, the asymmetrical ankle pad keeps the inner ankle protected from bumps against the bike’s crankset.

Lockdown fit. The Ion Rascal features the combination of laces and the brand's own Serpen Tie technology. The laces provide a time-tested closure while the Serpen Tie not only keeps the laces tucked away from getting caught in the bike but also doubles the security of the fit.

n The shoelaces are made from 100% Polyester.

Adequate airflow and prevents pressure points. Equipped with no-sew reinforcements and the brand’s Jet Stream technology, the inner fit is characterized by optimal comfort. The seamless reinforcements help prevent rubbing and chafing while the Jet Stream feature helps keep the foot cool no matter the weather.

This pair’s insole features the brand’s 2K insole design. It employs two components that work together to provide vibration dampening and arch support. The result is less foot fatigue during long rides. It is crafted from 30% Polyester and 70% Ethyl Vinyl Acetate.

Another footwear model from Ion called the Raid II has some similarities with the Ion Rascal. The Ion Raid II is said to share the same construction as the Rascal. In this context, construction means sizing and last.

The Rascal differs in that it employs a cleat system on the underside of the shoe and an added EVA midsole for added power transfer. The Rascal also features a Velcro strap and reinforced areas in the upper for additional retention and protection, respectively.
