Watching Paul George move past his defender is like watching a stream of water move past stones. Each movement is so efficient and effortless.
“For Paul, control is his form of quickness,” Nike designer Tony Hardman explains. “It’s why he looks so smooth when he moves on the court. He refines his footwork to only what’s essential. If a defender shows him something unexpected, he has a move to counter it, so he always looks in control.”
To help George move with ease, Nike crafted a lightweight footbed made of a full-length Nike Air unit. Replacing the traditional stobel board, the Air strobel is sewn onto the upper so that the foot sits directly on top of the cushion. This innovative cushioning system perfectly complements George’s fluid movements. Whether he is timing a crossover or making an irregularly-paced burst, the Air strobel provides responsiveness off the forefoot and plush stability at the heel.
George is also mindful of his signature shoe’s unique style. Reminiscent of the Air Flight ’98, the Nike PG 4 boasts a mesh-zipped shroud with a gill-like speed lacing system underneath. This combination provides supportive containment from tipoff to the final buzzer.
Cushion. For a unique cushioning sensation, the Nike PG 4 employs a dot-welded Nike Air bag that replaces the traditional strobel. This lightweight footbed engages the full surface area of the foot for a near-instantaneous feeling of responsiveness. A 6mm sockliner adds another layer of cushion for increased comfort.
Traction. These low-top Nike basketball sneakers utilize a circular traction pattern that offers increased multidirectional grip. The circular tread pattern also provides enhanced control on the court.
Closure. The PG 4 features a full bootie construction and an internal webbing system for locked-in comfort and a secure fit. A zippered overlay fastens over the laces for increased support and containment.
The Nike PG 4 makes use of a dual-mesh upper that provides supportive containment and ideal breathability.
Aside from the shoe’s playability, George also wanted the PG 4 to look good on camera. These Nike low-tops feature a semi-transparent shroud that delivers a level of stylistic flexibility. Two lace holes are located near the collar, so the laces can either be worn within the cover or externally.
“Paul likes to play with his laces over the shroud. During play, the mesh is a window into the color choices,” Hardman says. “It’s when the shoe is unzipped that you can see the range of combinations added by the laces. Between the upper colorways and the lacing colors beneath the mesh, players can make the look their own.”
The Nike PG 4 also has an outsole cutout that allows you to see the Air unit.
Signature details include “NG 11/01/17” and “OG 05/01/14” inscribed in the midsole.
Because of its semi-transparent design, the Nike PG 4 allows for some color dynamism. This added dimension allows designers to run wild with the colorways.
