The Air Jordan 34 is the result of Jordan Brand’s commitment to delivering the best in performance innovation.
“The Air Jordan signature game shoes have become the most influential line of performance footwear in basketball history,” Vice President of Jordan Brand Footwear Gentry Humphrey explains. “By introducing new, proprietary innovation with the XXXIV, the line’s game-changing legacy is extended to a new generation of athletes.”
Jordan Brand stripped away all the non-essential materials to give athletes only what they need on the court. The result is the lightest Jordan game shoe ever made.
“We thought about how can we make this one of the lightest game shoes ever?” lead designer Tate Kuerbis says.. “‘Let’s see what we don’t need.’ We do that a lot in the upper where we make pretty minimal uppers, but we’ve never [done this.] It’s pretty amazing that you can actually see through the shoe and see the Zoom.”
With direct insights from NBA stars such as Blake Griffin, Jason Tatum, and 2019 number 1 draft pick Zion Williamson, JB designers were able to craft a basketball sneaker that provides dynamic control, explosiveness, and responsiveness in any direction.
“Work on this shoe began by collating feedback from the Air Jordan XXXIII,” Jordan Brand designer Tate Kuerbis says. “Athletes noted a desire to improve traction and reduce weight — that became our starting point. We focused on athletes who are playing above the rim and making them more explosive.”
Cushion. One of the highlights of the Air Jordan XXXIV is an all-new Eclipse Plate.
“We took the thinking on Flight Plate and turned it to the side,” Kuerbis explains. “Now, whereas in the past we had the Flight Speed Plate over the airbag, we are taking it and turning it to the side, which allows you to do something completely different and unlock the Zoom, which we’ve never really done before.”
Made from molded TPU, the Eclipse Plate is designed to provide aerodynamic support and stability during side-to-side movements. The plate is also engineered to help athletes jump faster and be more controlled as they sprint down the court.
These Jordan basketball shoes boast visible Zoom Air cushioning at the heel and forefoot. The positioning of the Eclipse Plate unlocks the sensation of the forefoot Zoom Air unit for added bounce and responsiveness.
“Unlocking the Zoom is really about just letting it breathe and not contain it,” says Kuerbis.
Traction. Another feature that augments the properties of the new Eclipse Plate is the shoe's court-ready traction. The rugged herringbone traction pattern allows players to stop on a dime and propels them for a superior first step.
Closure. These basketball shoes feature a traditional tongue and lace-up closure for a fully customizable fit. A padded mid-top collar keeps the heel and ankle locked-in place.
The Air Jordan 34 features a mix of textiles and lightweight materials to reduce the shoe’s overall weight. The lightweight materials create a highly breathable upper without sacrificing support and stability.
“Behind [the netting] is the magic,” Senior Creative Design Director for Nike Basketball Ross Klein says. “A single layer material that is a performance woven that we’ve engineered to hold the strength.”
The Air Jordan 34 has a sleek look that is more about performance and less about lineage. “One of the things I love about this shoe is that it doesn’t remind you of any Jordan from the past,” Kuerbis says. “But, it does remind you of the purest form of a basketball shoe.”
“J4 – 34, 2.89-2019” is featured on the outsole to signify the 30th anniversary from the Air Jordan 4 to the 34. On the vamp, the number 23 is featured in Morse code.
Each colorway of the Air Jordan 34 is unique in its own right. Every colorway will feature a discoverable mark. For example, the branding on the heel counter will be different on every colorway.
