In 2011, 22-year old Derrick Rose made history by becoming the youngest NBA player ever to receive the league MVP award. “Back in training camp when I said I wanted to be MVP, I wasn’t trying to be cocky at all,” Derrick said. “I knew that I put a lot of hard work in over the summer in the offseason, and I just wanted to push myself.”
With a resurgence in popularity, Adidas basketball announced in late 2018 that they would be bringing back Derrick’s old basketball sneakers. The Three stripes will start with the shoe Derrick wore during his MVP campaign—the Adidas D Rose 1.5.
An updated version of the first D Rose, the D Rose 1.5 features the same technologies as the original. “We were really happy with the adiZero Rose 1. It was lighter, faster for Derrick and had Pure Motion technology. The shoe played great and got great reviews,” Designer Robbie Fuller explains.
Crafted to match the former MVP’s speed, the Adidas D Rose 1.5 boasts a Sprintskin upper for support and breathability. Underneath, the Adidas Sprintframe technology provides lightweight support while the Puremotion rubber outsole with Cilia traction delivers unparalleled grip on the hardwood.
Cushion. The Adidas D Rose 1.5 is equipped with an EVA midsole that provides a soft and cushioned feel underfoot.
Traction. These Adidas basketball shoes boast a Puremotion rubber outsole covered with a Cilia traction surface that provides exceptional grip on the hardwood.
Length and Width. Owners are reporting that the D Rose 1.5 runs slightly long and wide. Regular and wide-footers may get their exact size. However, players with narrow feet may want to try the shoes first for a better fit. If not, they may go down half a size.
Lockdown. As requested by Derrick, the Adidas D Rose 1.5 features a mid-to-high-top cut collar for heightened support. “Derrick likes to lock down the ankle, so the Speedwrap ankle braces he wears are a must, but going into the back half of the season and playoffs he wanted even more comfort and protection, and we obviously did our best to give it to him,” Fuller explained.
These Adidas basketball sneakers also boast a lightweight Sprtinframe for increased lockdown. The Sprintframe also acts as a midfoot shank for added stability and responsiveness.
The D Rose 1.5 boasts a basketball-specific Sprintskin upper constructed of a combination of mesh and rubber. According to Fuller, “The micro molded skin is directionally engineered to provide optimum reinforcement during hard lateral movements.”
This upper is designed to provide increased airflow and durability. “It is seamlessly applied to a mesh base for superior breathability and is made of a rubber-based material that adds increased durability for continuous wear. It also doesn’t have the wrinkling issues that synthetics typically have,” Fuller explains.
Derrick was heavily involved during the design phase of the D Rose 1.5. “Derrick’s getting more involved each project and shoe we launch,” Fuller said. “We meet and show him designs and get feedback on a regular basis. The raised collar height is a great example of his feedback incorporated into the final product.”
These Derrick Rose basketball shoes come in the following hues:

- Black/University Red
