5 reasons to buy

  • With good-sized and aggressive lugs, it performs very well in a multitude of trail and off-road terrain.
  • A sizeable number of runners loved its stable ride on uneven surfaces.
  • Breathability is something many runners also appreciated in the Asics Tambora 4.
  • It has an affordable price.
  • Many runners were pleasantly surprised by its ability to shed off the mud.

3 reasons not to buy

  • A few runners noted the appearance of wear and tear a bit earlier than what they expected from Asics.
  • Rain and dampness can cause the Tambora 4 to get uncomfortably soaked and heavy.
  • Some runners did not like their purchase as they were surprisingly half a size small.

Bottom line

Asics has a knack for producing shoes without too much fuss and are quite inexpensive. This flair continues in the Gel Tambora 4. It delivers a very comfortable ride, enough arch support for the challenging trail, and extreme breathability for an exhilarating run on the trails during dry conditions.

Updates to Asics Gel Tambora 4

  • The Asics Gel Tambora 4 trail running shoe is a lighter version and it has an improved upper construction that is more breathable and tougher. It is made from mesh material with synthetic leather, offering the combination of breathability, support, and durability at less the weight.
  • The upper is constructed with California Slip Last that is added to provide stability, support, and comfort. It is stitched directly into the EVA board and it enhances the durability of the inner area. A Removable Sock liner that is molded to the shape of the foot is added not just for soft comfort, but also for medical orthotic.
  • Another update of this version is the Rearfoot Gel cushioning added to its cushioning system. This cushioning enhancement provides the support and protection against impact and shock while keeps the shoe comfortable and bouncy.
  • This shoe also features the Trail Specific outsole, which is ideal for trail running and for outdoor activities. Its reversed lugs allow the shoe to tackle uphill, downhill, rough, and tough terrains.

Asics Gel Tambora 4 size and fit

The Tambora 4 is in standard length and width, designed to accommodate feet with narrow to medium measurement.. The toe box of this shoe is fit for runners with standard size, as well as its mid-foot and heel area.

The Tambora 4 has an outsole designed for trail running. The Trail Specific Outsole used in this shoe provides the traction and grip through the reversed lugs. This design has an aggressive pattern on treads, allowing the shoe to track mixed terrains and different outdoor surfaces.

The midsole of the Tambora 4 have the minimal construction for neutral runners, but are soft and comfortable enough with great protection against impact and for shock absorption because of the addition of the Rearfoot Gel Cushioning technology. It also helps attenuates shock and impact all throughout the transition whether on short or medium distances. Instead of the usual EVA midsole system, the Gel Cushioning system is used in this shoe to work with the Trusstic System for responsiveness, comfort, and softness.

The upper of this shoe is constructed with lightweight synthetic leather protecting the mesh materials. Because of this construction and materials, the shoe is lightweight, more breathable, durable, and comfortable to the feet.

Asics also adds a removable Sock liner for comfort enhancement and for medical orthotic accommodation, while the stitched California Slip Lasting provides comfortable fit.
