The Asics Gel Rocket 8 is crafted for people who enjoy indoor sports. Its plush interior securely locks in the foot while the mesh ensures that the foot remains fresh even during intense games. Agile sports like volleyball need footwear that can deliver support during side-to-side movements, which this trainer provides with its synthetic overlays. The shoe features two layers of shock-absorbing units for cushioning. And for traction, it is equipped with a grippy outsole that makes it easy to change directions without slipping.

Asics as a company has been around since 1945, though it was originally called as ONITSUKA Shokai, and eventually as ONITSUKA Co., Ltd. in 1949. Its history in the volleyball world goes back to 1964 when it released the Rotation 6 volleyball shoes, named after the six rotating players of the game. Asics brought flexibility to volleyball shoes with the introduction of a mesh upper in the Rotation 72 trainer released in 1972.

The next iteration, the Gel Rocket 9, sports the same silhouette and technologies as the Gel Rocket 8. The two models only differ in the type of mesh used and the appearance of the synthetic overlays.

Traction. The underside of the Gel Rocket 8 employs a gum rubber outsole. This compound is grippy on polished, wooden floors. Under the ball of the foot is a pivot point that helps players turn without putting too much stress on their knees.

Flexibility. The outsole features a segmented construction that aids the forefoot move independently from the heel, resulting in a more natural heel-to-toe transition. The rubber wraps up the front to help with the toe drag.

Support. A different colored segment is found under the arch; this is Asics’ Trusstic System technology. This element reinforces the arch without adding weight to the shoe. The rubber outsole wraps up in critical areas to help with lateral stability.

Cushioning. The Asics Gel Rocket 8 is equipped with a full-length ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam midsole. This layer provides impact resistance throughout the entire underfoot. It is also pliable, allowing the foot to move naturally.

Comfort. Another element used by this volleyball trainer is the Forefoot Gel technology. This colloidal component adjusts to the movements of the foot to reduce pressure and enhance comfort. It also aids in the smooth heel-to-toe transition.

Foothold and breathability. The Asics Gel Rocket 8 covers the foot in mesh material. This fabric is soft, which allows the foot to expand naturally throughout the day. The open-cell construction ensures that the foot chamber is well ventilated.

Protection. Because the mesh is soft, synthetic overlays are placed in critical areas. These elements cover the front to protect the toes against bumps. They also form a heel cup that steadies the hindfoot during gameplay.

Lockdown. Fit adjustments are made possible with the traditional lacing system found on the Gel Rocket 8. Synthetic overlays form a panel that is integrated with the eyelets on either side of the midfoot. This construction helps amplify the lateral support when the laces are tightened.

  • The Asics vector logo is visible on the lateral and medial sides of the midfoot.
  • Dry brushing can remove surface dirt on the Gel Rocket 8 while a clean cloth or a brush dipped in a warm, soapy solution can take care of stains.
