Asics Gel Lyte V RB History

later be renamed Onitsuka Tiger and would start to feature the Tiger Stripe, an iconic hallmark of the brand’s identity. In 1987, the decade-old Asics brand was able to find a breakthrough in the form of the Gel Lyte shoe, which boasted a then-revolutionary 9.9-ounce lightweight structure.

The sneaker made use of the Alpha GEL technology, a silicon-based gel that was already making waves in the rocket industry. When injected into the midsole, it efficiently diverted impact from vertical to horizontal, decreasing vibration and injury. Soon, many more models would follow in the footsteps of the first Gel Lyte, creating a series that continues to enjoy popularity up to today.

In 1989, the Gel Lyte II was released, featuring brighter color accents and improved stability. This was followed by the iconic Gel Lyte III in 1990, the quintessential running sneaker from Asics. Its silhouette is among the most recognizable ones in history, and its split tongue design makes it unforgettable. Two years later, the Gel Lyte Ultra was introduced (the number IV is considered to be unlucky in Japanese superstition). Completing the series is another classic and retro favorite, the Gel Lyte V, unveiled in 1993.

Proving to be yet another success, the Gel Lyte V was followed by its own different editions, including the Gel Lyte V RB. It is so named because the shoe was “reborn” (RB) for the year 2018. This new model updated the V’s construction by creating a thinner mono-sock for a snug feel. Several other updates were made, and the shoe was produced in neutral colorways as befitting a true classic.

Asics Gel Lyte V RB Style

With a sophisticated monochromatic appeal, the Asics Gel Lyte V RB fits the vibe of the spring and summer seasons. It can be worn with light blue jeans and a loose shirt for a throwback look. Any kind of pants will match well with the shoes, paired with simple t-shirts or light jackets. Socks are not necessary as the kicks mold to the foot like a real sock, creating an almost lighter-than-air feel, ideal for any casual outing.

Fit & Sizing

Expect a form-fitting feel when wearing the Asics Gel Lyte V RB. It has an inner sock which molds to the shape of the foot for a comfortable and snug fit. It’s available in medium width in US unisex sizing, ranging from men's 6/women's 7.5 up to men's 14/women's 15.5. Ankle movement is unconstrained as the shoe has a low-top design. Laces offer adjustability of the fit, while the faux leather and mesh upper delivers sturdy and breathable support.

Notable Features

As a special edition of the Gel Lyte V, the low-top Asics Gel Lyte V RB brings the classic sneaker into 2018 modern sensibilities. It's still a GEL-cushioned shoe with the same silhouette, but its leather-and-mesh upper hides the mono-sock, this time made thinner for a tighter fit. It also has an updated eyelet stay for a smooth finish.

The sock-like elastic material stretches and adjusts with every step. Asics branding is seen on the sides in the form of the Tiger Stripe hidden behind the mesh paneling.  Additional Asics branding is found on the tongue label and the heel counter. A pull tab assists in gliding the shoe on and off. Finishing off the sneaker's laidback elegance is the white midsole, with some wavy detailing.
