Asics Gel DS Trainer OG History
Japanese brand Asics comes from the Latin phrase “anima sana in corpore sano” which translates to "If you pray to God, you should pray for a sound mind in a healthy body." The brand has been in existence for close to 70 years but remains less popular outside of Japan and some major American and European cities.
But what the company lacks in popularity and endorsements from Hollywood are well compensated by its cult following and immense approval among hardcore athletes and sports enthusiasts gaining respect for its designs of top rated performance footwear in the world.
Founded by Kihachiro Onitsuka, Onitsuka Co. Ltd. Had its beginnings in Kobe, Japan in September 1949 with a vision of creating good sporting shoes by fostering the people through sports.
The company slowly inched its way into popularity first by manufacturing basketball shoes and other sports performance footwear. On July 21, 1977, Onitsuka Tiger merged with GTO and JELENK to form a general sports equipment manufacturer Asics Corporation. Despite the name change, a vintage range of Asics shoes is still produced and sold internationally under the Onitsuka Tiger label.
With a distinguishable Asics logo designed by Herb Lubalin, the company has remained with its goal of contributing to the global sports culture and helping people around the world to live in health and happiness through sports.
However, everyone would agree that the biggest contribution of the brand Asics to the footwear industry is the production of the Gel running shoes. The Gel cushioning system that Asics developed placed the company on the pedestal as a serious player in shoe manufacturing.
The Gel Cushioning system, a soft material injected at the shoe forefoot and heel, absorbs landing strikes, reduces fatigue, and reduce impact injuries.
Early developers of the Gel cushioning claim they are better than an air cushioning system. The gel is made up of a silicone based substance that is injected into the EVA midsole for shock absorption and dispersing vibration.
Soon several Gel series shoes were released by the brand. Among those shoes using the Gel cushioning system released in 1995 is the Asics Gel DS Trainer. It became very popular among long distance and high mileage runners. The running shoe features a DuoSole outsole that has superior grip and traction and a stabilized and durable upper for comfortable runs.
Asics Gel DS Trainer OG Style
Maintaining monochromatic colors of black or white, the Asics Gel DS Trainer OG is splattered with accents to highlight its modern design further. The running shoe turned lifestyle kicks also has an overlay comprising of quality leather material while its underlay is composed of mesh and a sturdy netted toebox. Coming in contrasting colorways, one option for the trainer includes a black base with aqua and hot pink accents while the white base has plum and green accents with a neon green DuoSole.
An Asics branding stripes on the side panels and another brand detail at the tongue completes the look. The shoe comes a bit chunky but very trendy with vibrant color accents to elevate the overall design. The lifestyle sneaker also goes well with casual clothing.
Fit & Sizing
The Asics Gel DS Trainer OG fits true to size and has a traditional flat lacing for a good lockdown. The shoe also has a one-piece bootie silhouette that hugs the feet. The retro sneaker comes in medium width. The sneaker comes in unisex sizes 4 to 14 for men with women’s sizes going down 1.5 to the existing unisex size for an equivalent fit.
Equipped with a reliable Gel cushioning system in the midsole since it was first released, the Asics Gel DS Trainer OG promises comfort and durability. The bi-density DuoMax foam in the midsole provides a reliable cushioning in every step. The midsole absorbs impact while delivering a comfortable ride. Another important notable feature is the DuoSole outsole system with an enhanced grip and traction on various surfaces wet and dry.

- The Asics Gel DS Trainer has an external skeleton upper over mesh designed for extra midfoot stability.
