Altra Wahweap notable features
-The Altra Wahweap is a versatile piece of gear, in which adventurers can efficiently negotiate approach routes and be casual dinner-ready at the same time. Its flexibility and lightness promise freer mobility over different types of backcountry terrain.
-This packable approach hiker is made up of animal-free components, making it one of Altra’s vegan-friendly shoes. It comes with a moderate toe rocker, which allows for easier transitions, particularly over level surfaces.
Size and fit
A below-the-ankle approach shoe for men and women is the Altra Wahweap. It comes engineered with the brand’s FootShape toe box, which promotes the natural splaying of the toes. This exclusive fit-centric tech also allows the big toe to lie flat (not bent) within the shoe’s confines. Lockdown security is courtesy of the Wahweap’s lace-up closure.
OutsoleThe Wahweap is engineered with a heavy-duty rubber outsole for multi-surface traction. Its grippy lugs take the form of the bone structure of the human foot. It has a siped construction, which delivers additional slip and skid resistance, especially on slick slabs and boulders.
Just above the toes of the bony foot design is the outsole’s climbing zone. With it, users can smear and edge with more tenacity.
When it comes to giving the foot adequate cushioning and stability, the Altra Wahweap relies heavily on its foam-like midsole. It is made of EVA or ethylene-vinyl acetate—a kind of synthetic material that, much like rubber, provides enough shock absorption on impact. A midsole made of EVA is also highly resistant to wear and tear.
Altra designers coupled this cushy component with a soft foam of an insole (a.k.a. footbed). Besides extra cushioning, this removable layer also delivers additional support, especially around the area that bridges the heel and the arch.
UpperThe Altra Wahweap hides the foot in its low-cut upper made of reinforced fabric. It is engineered with 30% hemp for durability. Its collapsible heel has a sturdy pull tab for easy on and off. Both its soft tongue and flexible collar are lightly padded to give the foot extra comfort.
Over at its forefoot is a wrap-around rand. Its presence grants abrasion protection and climbing grip at the same time.
Completing the Wahweap’s upper equation is the approach shoe’s fit management system. It consists of a flat lace and a total of 6 pairs of abrasion-resistant eyelets.
