Good to know
Generally, for trails that are easy to tackle, go with low-cut shoes. Go mid to high if there are more trail obstacles.

The Aku Montagnards are the most precise, durable alpine boot I have come across. They pass the test.
There really isn’t anything not to like about them, well apart from perhaps the name!
Updates to Aku Montagnard GTX
- The Montagnard GTX is designed for classic mountaineering and is optimized for cold weather use. It comes with a Perwanger leather which employs Gore-Tex and Primaloft linings to provide waterproofing, breathability, and insulation.
- The brand’s very own Internal Midsole System (IMS) grants cushioning and comfort to users. It is paired with a lasting board and Custom Fit Pro Alum footbed for stability and support.
- A Vibram rubber makes this boot grip on various ground surfaces. It has an aggressive and self-cleaning profile for optimal performance.
Aku Montagnard GTX size and fit
The Aku Montagnard GTX is a reasonably true-to-size mountaineering boot for men. It comes in regular sizes and standard (D) width. Its lace-up closure allows differential tensioning for a more customized fit.
The Aku Montagnard GTX features the Vibram Nepal outsole. Its profile includes deep lugs which bite into various types of terrain. Also, it channels water out and prevents clogging to keep a grippy ride. The semi-blocked design of the heel and toe areas assists in steep ascents and descents.
The Montagnard GTX employs the brand-owned Internal Midsole System (IMS). It includes a bi-density midsole which uses an Exoskeleton construction for its medium-density PU foam. This design provides protection and stability on the trails. The lighter PU foam is placed in the inner part of the boot to cushion, absorb shock and render rebound. The TPU heel and toe inserts receive crampons.
A lasting board (made of 6-4 mm nylon, 30% carbon fiber and die-cut EVA) yields underfoot firmness. A Custom Fit Pro Alum footbed (with a rigid perforated EVA shank) sits atop of it which cradles the foot and gives anatomic support and promotes warmth.
This high-cut mountaineering boot uses hard-wearing 3 mm Perwanger leather for its upper. It is lined with a Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort laminate which maintains a ventilated in-shoe feel while preventing water intrusion. This lining, together with Primaloft insulation (placed at the tongue to the toe box area), keeps the foot warm even in very low temperatures.
A full rubber rand wraps the base of the upper which amplifies the boot’s abrasion resistance. A micro-gaiter, on the other hand, prevents entry of snow and other trail debris. A pull tab is attached at the back of the boot to assist mountaineers in donning and doffing.
Its closure system, starting from the shaft, accommodates three pairs of speed hooks. Then a cord loop is placed in the ankle area which also serves as a stretch zone, optimizing mobility. Lastly, it is followed by combination eyelets.
- This mountaineering boot is compatible with automatic crampons.
