Adidas Tubular Radial CNY History
Adidas wanted to reinvent the basketball sneaker back in the 90s; this is what drove the creation and release of the Adidas Tubular. Regarded as a kick that is ahead of its time, it exhibited a streamlined profile and futuristic design that was not taken well by sneaker fans of that era. Apparently sneakerheads in the 90s were not quite ready for cutting-edge kicks, and consequently, the Tubular was put in the archives just two years after its release.
A few years later, Nic Galway the VP of Global Design for Adidas Originals was browsing through the brand's archives to look for inspiration for new shoe designs. There he spotted the Tubular from the 90s and saw its huge potential in today's market. The company worked on this shoe model for half a decade and finally, in 2014, Adidas introduced the Tubular in an all-new and improved silhouette and called it the Adidas Tubular Runner.
According to Galway, the Tubular Runner was directly influenced by Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 Qasa silhouette. This time around the shoe had a successful run, and sneaker enthusiasts wanted it. With its success, the Tubular family inevitably grew and was reinterpreted in countless ways and versions. It has established its name as one of the most sought-after pairs in the sneaker scene.
One of this kick's reimagining is the Adidas Tubular Radial CNY, which is a special release to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The shoe was launched in 2017 along with other iconic Adidas shoes such as the Stan Smith, Superstar, and a few others. It retains its heritage's classic profile with stylish detailing that showcases Chinese inspired graphics.
