Adidas Tubular Radial Style
The designers of the Adidas Tubular Radial took the regular appearance of its iconic origin and combined it with modern details. Its upper is made of mélange knit and has suede overlays. Further advancing its contemporary appeal is the midsole’s textured ripple effect. It also has a tube-inspired design.
The other Adidas Tubular Radial shoe releases have an upper made of neoprene. This version features Three-stripes made of pigskin. Its heel overlay is made of premium leather.
Although affordable and cheap, the Adidas Tubular Radial silhouette creates a cheeky statement. It exudes a classy design that’s great for a variety of occasions. It also looks excellent on sporty styles and casual looks.
Here are styling suggestions to make the most out of your Adidas Tubular Radial sneaker purchase:
- Men’s Adidas Tubular Radial casual shoes are best paired with shorts or ankle pants to highlight the aesthetics of the shoe. The Adidas Tubular Radial in black, brown, blue, tan, or grey low-top kicks, for example, are also matched with clothes of neutral colors for that minimalist sneaker vibe. Pair them with a hoodie, sweatshirt, or jeans and top with a warm jacket for 1990s-inspired fashion.
The Adidas Tubular Radial women’s sneakers are non-existent as the design is primarily made and offered in men’s sizes. However, female sneakerheads can still rock this 1990s retro runner in style by wearing the vibrant colorways like the Adidas Tubular Radial in red, in pink, and in olive green.
Adidas Tubular Radial History
The Adidas Tubular Radial takes its design cues from the original Tubular—a silhouette that was postponed and made a strong comeback. The first Tubular shoe was released in 1993.
The shoe got its name from its unique outsole design. Adidas designers modeled the Tubular sneaker from the inflatable rubber tubing of car tires. The outsole design aims to give the shoe a boost in traction and grip. Early prototypes resulted in the Adidas Radical shoe which comes with a Torsion bar and connectors and a sole that needs to be inflated.
However, it was initially designed for basketball use. Unfortunately, the shoe was way ahead of its time during its initial debut. While the concept was excellent, the lack of innovations rendered the initial design infeasible production-wise. Two years after its initial drop, the Tubular was shelved.
Adidas Tubular Revival
After years of not having the Adidas Tubular silhouette in the company’s line-up of sneakers, one person still believed in the potential of the profile. It was none other than Vice President of Global Design for Adidas Originals Nic Galway.
The silhouette was resurrected as the Tubular Runner that combines heritage with sports and fashion in 2014. The revolutionary design removed the boundaries between sports footwear and a high fashion piece. The revival of this classic took about five years of research.
Galway looking back at the roots of the shoe recalls how the sole unit was inspired by inner tire tubes. Another inspiration for Tubular Runner was Yohji Yamamoto’s high-top Adidas Y-3 Qasa silhouette which released the similarly designed kicks a few years before the re-release of the Adidas Tubular Runner.
People from the fashion industry fell in love with the silhouette. It even had its show during the Paris Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2015. Galway himself said in an interview that although it’s a performance-based shoe, they intended it to be a lifestyle product.
Noteworthy Tubular Colorways
Fast forward to 2016; the silhouette was reworked as the Adidas Tubular Radial. The modern profile features all-new tooling combined with premium materials. For its debut, Adidas Originals released the Marle Pack for the Adidas Tubular Radial. Its upper is made of marle fabric in tonal navy and gray colorways.
As the Tubular shoe range grew through the years, the line of shoes keeps getting bigger with low, mid, and high top versions of the favorite sneakers. Among the shoes released under the Adidas Tubular range include the Adidas Tubular Shadow, Adidas Tubular Viral, Adidas Tubular Nova, Adidas Tubular Runner, Adidas Tubular Doom, Adidas Tubular X Primeknit, and Adidas Tubular Defiant among others.
As low-rise shoes, the Adidas Tubular Radial sneakers follow the aggressive design trends of the 1990s with a modern upgrade of a sock-like construction and a slightly elongated tongue for that contemporary look. The lace-up Adidas Originals Tubular shoes aside from having the distinctive Tubular soles also have soft textile and suede upper with the signature Three-stripe logo on the sides.
Some of the favorite colorways include Adidas Tubular Radial in black, Adidas Tubular Radial in tan, Adidas Tubular Radial in green, and Adidas Tubular Radial in grey. Also receiving positive reviews include the Adidas Tubular Radial 'Hologram,' Adidas Tubular Radial 'Granite,' Adidas Tubular Radial 'Triple Black,' Adidas Tubular Radial 'Ice Mint,' and Adidas Tubular Radial 'Crystal White' unique colorways.
While these kicks are made for men, it soon caught the attention of women. The Adidas Tubular Radial in pink and olive green as well as the Adidas Tubular Radial in red colorways, in particular, gained loyal followers from female Adidas sneaker fans due its premium materials and finish and its hues that add a touch of femininity to the sneaker silhouette.
