Adidas Superstar Animal History
One of the shoes that define Adidas as a brand is the Adidas Superstar. Truly an iconic classic that roots back as early as the ‘70s and the ‘80s era, this low-top shoe has always been a top-selling and a favorite Three Stripes kick across generations.
The Superstar initially dropped in 1969. Based on the Adidas Pro Model shoe, it was the Three Stripes' first-ever low-top basketball shoe that utilizes an all leather upper and a rubber shell toe. Because of these features, it gained the “shell toe” and “shell shoes” monikers among many others.
It began gaining worldwide recognition when NBA pro player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar started wearing his pair of Superstar during his on-court games. Then in the ‘80s, its presence and influence reached the streets and the hip-hop culture. A big part of this was the American hip-hop trio Run-D.M.C., who was known for regularly wearing Adidas tracksuits and lace-less, tongue pushed Superstars.
For years, the Adidas Superstar remains a significant shoe. Although initially designed for basketball courts, it transitioned into a fashion sneaker that true Adidas fanatics and the general consumers still patronize. In 2015, this classic Three Stripes shoe was re-launched through the Adidas Original line, and it only took a year before it gained the top spot in the Top 10 Best Shoes in the US (sales in dollars).
Still popular after almost five decades, the Superstar proves that it is indeed a “superstar” shoe. In the recent times, it released in various colorways and versions with a bit of design or material tweaks, and it remained in the mainstream. One of its variants is the Adidas Superstar Animal.
The Adidas Superstar Animal first released in 2016. It looks just like the classic Superstar, but with an updated debossed leather upper with an animal skin texture (either a faux snake or ostrich skin). The classic details are still there, like the Three Stripes on the sides, the heel tab accent, and the Trefoil brandings on the heel and tongue. It has a herringbone-patterned rubber cupsole and the signature rubber shell toe.
Adidas Superstar Animal Style
Another modern-meets-classic shoe is the Adidas Superstar Animal. Staying true to its iconic and classic basketball shoe roots, this version of the Shell Toe retains the timeless look of the original Superstar while incorporating a creative mix yet the low-key charm of faux animal skin texture on the leather upper. Sealing off the look are the Three Stripes reinforcements on the sides and the leather heel tab, which also function as added support.
Fit & Sizing
The Adidas Superstar Animal is one of the many modern-day variations of the iconic shell toe low-top from the Three Stripes. With a minor difference in the texture and design of the leather upper, one can expect its fit to be similar to the original Superstar’s. It is available in men’s sizing from size 5 to 12 in D Medium or Standard width.
The low-top construction of this shoe may lack ankle support, but with its basketball shoe roots, expect the necessary hold and support that your feet need for casual, day-to-day activities. Further, the traditional lace closure gives a snug fit that can be loosened or tightened.
It takes a closer look to distinguish the Adidas Superstar Animal from the classic Superstar loved by many since the ‘70s. It retains the DNA of the famous low-top including the signature rubber shell toe and the iconic Three Stripes branding on the sides. However, this variation got an updated upper fit for the modern-day adventures. Subtle yet creative, the upper of this shell toe sneaker features faux animal skin texture (either snakeskin or ostrich skin) that adds a touch of modernized look to the timeless classic.
- In between the Three Stripes are perforation details that allow ventilation. Added in-shoe comfort is made possible through the lightly padded tongue and collar.
- The Trefoil brandings are visible on the tongue and heel, which is a further nod to the original Superstar classic.
- The rubber cupsole is sealed off with herringbone patterns for optimum traction on the streets.
- The insole is removable.
