Adidas Superstar 80s Metal Toe History
German-based shoemaker Adidas has gone a long way regarding sneaker production. With iconic shoes such as the Adidas Superstar, the shoe company from Herzogenaurach town has produced through the years iconic sneakers since the time that it was established by Adolph “Adi” Dassler on August 18, 1949.
It would be two decades later, in 1969, that the brand will begin to release one of its most iconic and popular shoes, the Adidas Superstar.
Before bulky basketball shoes were the norm, sleek and light sneakers are the norm inside the ball court. Shoes like the Superstar were getting noticed on the court for the innovative use of leather upper, a rubber shell toe and low top construction, which at that time is already considered an innovation in basketball footwear.
When the Adidas Superstar was launched in 1969, both players from the NCAA and the NBA began to take notice of the slim basketball shoe with that noticeable three-stripe branding. At some point, the popularity of the Superstar was undeniable that some 75 percent of players wearing basketball shoes were produced by the brand.
With its rubber toe feature and full leather upper, it was one of the most durable and stable shoes at the time. Big stars that include NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have donned the Superstar on the court. But a few years since its popularity in the court has died down, the shoe has gained a following among the hip-hop loving audience.
Hip-hop stars Run D.M.C.has really helped a lot in capturing this whole new audience. Wearing Adidas Superstars in concert and featuring the brand in their songs including the classic hit “My Adidas” have placed the Superstar in the consciousness of hip-hop fans.
It is amusing to note, however, that Adidas only recognized that the brand has been receiving interest in the hip-hop circles when one of the multi-billion dollar brand’s employees attended a jam-packed concert of Run D.M.C. where a pair of Superstars were flashed to the audience. Seeing this as an opportunity, Adidas offered Run D.M.C. an endorsement deal and the rest is history.
More than 45 years after the Superstar Adidas re-issued the Superstar 80s Metal Toe as a retro lifestyle shoe commemorating the shoes’ popularity in the 1980s under the Adidas Originals line. Treatment of the full leather material of shoes has also been stressed legally by medical professionals.
