Adidas Superstar 80s Cutout History
Adidas puts a new spin to some of its classic silhouettes by styling them up using an entirely fresh upper concept. The first shoe to receive such a makeover was the Adidas Stan Smith, followed by the Adidas Superstar and the Adidas Gazelle.
The brand takes off the original coverings of these much-adored styles and replaces them with a multi-dimensional cutout leather. All three iconic models seemingly went through a wardrobe change and came out with different airy leather coats punctured with large laser-cut designs. This seasonal design came out at the start of spring in 2017.
The Adidas Superstar is almost unrecognizable, except for its distinct shell toe design at the tip of the shoe. This particular version is named the Adidas Superstar 80s Cutout, which is perhaps one of the most daring alterations ever made to a heritage shoe.
Those who fall within the millennial group would readily recognize the Adidas Superstar as a lifestyle sneaker with a vintage design that goes back to an early period of basketball, long before the likes of Michael Jordan dominated the sport.

The Adidas Superstar was introduced in 1969 as a basketball shoe with a distinctive rubber shell toe. The simple upper design was made of full grain leather with jagged Three-Stripe logo. Underneath the shoe is a herringbone pattern, a common outsole feature seen in most basketball shoes, which offers grip and stability to the foot during lateral movements.
When the Adidas Superstar was unveiled, it got the attention of basketball players in the NCAA and NBA leagues. One of NBA’s towering figures that created a name for this shoe is legendary player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was seen on the hardcourt on several occasions while sporting the Adidas Superstar.
Adidas Superstar had a quiet start on its race to popularity. It took nearly two decades before it became a much-celebrated figure off the court. Hip-hop groups began patronizing this silhouette led by the influential rap group Run DMC.
Soon enough, Adidas inked a partnership with Run DMC, the first-ever collaboration between a sportswear brand and a hip-hop group. Together they re-launched the Adidas Superstar in 1986. The group also penned and released a song titled, “My Adidas” on the same year, which resonated in the minds of their fans and further brought fame to this former hoops shoe.
The result of their tie-up was a clear validation of Adidas Superstar’s influence in the sneaker market. Towards the late 1990s, several other prominent names were seen rocking the Adidas Superstar, such as Puff Daddy, Jay Z, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, to name a few.
As the popularity of the Adidas Superstar continues to soar, the brand constantly creates new styles and designs which keeps this timeless model relevant through various trends and seasons. The new millennium saw a series of collaborative ventures between Adidas and other lifestyle labels.
