Good to know
The Adidas Superstar 80s generally has a snug fit and runs true to size. The shoes are kept tight by a classic lacing system and leather tongue.
Displaying the silhouette of the 1980s most popular sneaker that has become synonymous with the birth of hip-hop culture and casual street style, the Adidas Superstar is one of the most successful and bestselling designs of the German sneaker brand.
With the uniquely identifiable rubber shell-toe design, this basketball shoe turned popular lifestyle sneaker that had a resurgence in popularity in the past two years as interests in mixing and matching sneakers with trendy clothes have slowly picked up in the past years. The Adidas Superstar 80’s does not only bring you nostalgia but an upgraded feel of this classic footwear.
The most notable feature of the Adidas Superstar 80s is the full-grain leather upper that covers the shoe from the inside and out with a softer leather lining for a comfortable in-shoe feel all-day and all-night.
This all-leather built of the former basketball kicks turned lifestyle sneaker gives it a premium look that takes us back in time to the eighties when the budding street style culture is just blossoming. Further improving the looks is the famous rubber shell toe, the updated 3-stripes now made with felt and a durable rubber outsole.
Before bulky basketball shoes were the norm, sleek and street-style sneakers on the court were the standard. Among those that really shone the brightest even up to this day is the Adidas Superstar.
Shoes like the Adidas Superstars were then getting noticed in the basketball court for their all-leather upper, rubber shell toe, and low top design which at that time is considered an innovation in basketball footwear.
The first designs of the Superstar came out in 1969. It wasn’t long enough NBA and NCAA players started to notice the Superstar reaching, at some point, some 75 percent of the players wearing the shoes which at that time features more advanced technology and protection with the rubber shell toe feature. Among the stars who donned the Superstar inside the court is NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Over the years, however, it wouldn’t be long for the Superstar to be noticed by a whole new different audience. Just when the Adidas Superstar’s sales decline with the entry of Air Jordans and other basketball shoes, hip-hop legends Run D.M.C. revived the shoe by wearing them in their concerts and featuring the brand in their songs including the classic hit “My Adidas.”
The only time Adidas recognized that the brand has been receiving interest in the hip-hop scene and streetwear scene was when one of their employees attended a jam-packed concert of the group. The rest, of course, is history. Adidas offered Run D.M.C. an endorsement deal and customized its classic shoe to favor the tastes of its new fandom.
The iconic silhouette of the basketball shell toe was re-released by Adidas Originals in early 2015 to relive the glory days of this classic sneaker that became a cult favorite of the hip-hop scene in the 1980s. Re-released with pony-haired 3-stripes, the shoes maintained its classic look never deviating from the original silhouette of the clamshell toe and herringbone pattern cup sole.
Since it was resurrected, the Adidas Superstar 80s had different takes on upper materials including the introduction of latest textiles such as Primeknit as well as new colorways to cause excitement among its avid sneaker fans and the new breed of millennials who have started to love retro sneakers.
- Updated shoe details include a soft leather lining for comfort, felt stripe details, a gum rubber outsole, and a gold Trefoil logo finish placed in the tongue.
