Such knitted feature not only gives this sneaker its distinct character but keeps the feet locked up safely. The purpose of this technology is to keep everything minimal and down to its bare essentials.

Highly influential fashion icon, music artist, and entrepreneur Pharrell Williams has been in collaboration with Adidas since 2014. He had the opportunity to recreate some of the celebrated profiles of the Three-Stripes label, namely the Stan Smith, Superstar, and more recently the NMD. Some of these works came out before Pharrell and Adidas developed the Hu segment.

  Pharrell Williams x Adidas

One of the favorite sneakers that sprung from the partnership between Pharrell Williams x Adidas is the BBC x Adidas Stan Smith “Pony Hair” which appeared in 2015. Billionaires Boys Club or BBC is Pharrell’s streetwear clothing brand which he co-created with BAPE initiator Nigo. For this team-up, the old-school, tennis-inspired sneaker is reinvented, which featured BBC’s helmet head emblem on the tongue and “B” logo on the heel tab.

Also on the same year, Adidas Originals x Pharrell Williams dressed the classic Stan Smith with a colorful floral jacquard pattern. The exterior design of this shoe was inspired by the fabrics at the Le Marché Saint Pierre, a renowned textile shop located in Paris.

In 2016, another representation of the Stan Smith emerged from the team up of Pharrell’s streetwear clothing label and Adidas Originals, the BBC x Adidas Stan Smith “Palm Tree.” The palm tree prints on this pack came in eye-grabbing colors of orange-red and vivid green. Of course, this revamped work didn’t miss out the B symbol which is placed on the heel tab.

  Pharrell Williams Tennis Hu

Finally, after the series of partnerships between the influential streetwear designer and Three Stripes company, Pharrell’s sneaker collection named Hu, short for Human Ultimatum, was added as a segment of Adidas in 2014.

The first pack of sneakers that came out from such collaboration is the Adidas x Pharrell Williams Hu NMD which appeared in 2016. At that time, the frenzy over the Adidas NMDs has gone massive and reached overseas which pushed the brand to create new styles season after season.

For the initial set of Hu sneakers, dubbed the “Human Race” collection, Pharrell reinvented the traditional NMD, draping its upper with Primeknit, adding TPU lacing system on the sides, while keeping the Boost cushioning below.

Pharrell’s fondness for the timeless Stan Smith is seen on the very first sneaker that came out from his signature Hu line, which is branded as the Pharrell Williams Tennis Hu. Dropped in May 2017, this remastered look yanked out some of the salient features of the OG Stan Smith but left the most recognizable heel tab and incorporated the classic white and green color combination.

  SolarHu Sneaker Capsule

After taking cues from the much favored Adidas Stan Smith, the Adidas Originals x Pharrell Williams crafted another head-turning sneaker pack done in a medley of colors. The shades on the reimagined versions echo the traditional weaving techniques of the East African region and the vibrant cultures of Asia.

Coined as the SolarHu capsule, the initial set of releases borrowed the silhouette of the fan-favorite NMD and took on a splash of bright hues, which has already become a trademark element of the Pharrell Hu collection. Incorporating the cultural keynotes of the said regions, the SolarHu NMD are garbed in bold color palettes and patterns such as Clear Sky, Powder Blue, White, and Black colorways.

In August 2018, Hu by Pharrell Williams introduced a modified version of the Tennis Hu interspersed with a blend of whimsical color detailing and incorporation of suede and leather on the upper. The revised iteration called the Adidas Pharrell Williams SolarHu Tennis V2 is devoid of the Boost cushioning technology and instead utilized the impact-absorbent EVA foam midsole.

The Tennis V2 surfaced in two color variations of Primeknit that reflect African heritage, the Scarlet/White/Core Black and the Yellow/ Cloud White/ Core Black. These angular-shaped casual sneakers have minimal suede overlays and heel patch that displays the combined branding of the Three Stripes and Pharrell Williams.

  • Suede overlays accentuate the Primeknit upper.
  • Its sockliner shows a graphic of Chinese foot pressure points which is common to Pharrell Hu sneakers.
  • The debossed Trefoil and Hu logos appear on the tongue.
  • Its cushioned midsole features EVA foam.
  • The heel counter displays the combined logos of Pharrell Williams Hu and Adidas Three Stripes.
