Pharrell and Adidas have a long history of collaboration starting in 2014 when the singer, rapper, and producer signed a partnership contract with Adidas.
One of the first silhouettes Pharrell chose to exercise his creative skill on was the legendary Stan Smith. In 2014, Pharrell Williams x Adidas Stan Smith Small Polka Dot sneakers were the first to showcase the singer’s irreverent style and love of color. He gave the white and green leather tennis shoes a fun new twist by giving them new shades and adding small polka dots all over the uppers.
That was only the beginning. Pharrell loved Stan Smiths so much that his Tennis Hu range was largely inspired by them. He has also frequently revisited the silhouette in releases such as the Icons Pack of August 2017, where he dressed the iconic shoes in full-grain leather, and the Blank Canvas Collection.
The Blank Canvas collection, which dropped on February 23, 2018, featured three silhouettes: the Hu Holi Blank Canvas Tennis Hu PK, Hu Holi Blank Canvas NMD, and the Hu Holi Stan Smith BC. The pack was inspired by the Holi Festival of India where bodies are painted from head-to-toe by brightly-colored powders flung into the air. Pharrell imagined the shoes as crisp white uniforms people wore before they got stained by dyes.
