The Adizero Varner 2 is the second footwear collaboration between Olympic wrestler Jake Varner and Adidas. Though it retains the silhouette of the first iteration, there are some differences between the models:

  • The outsole has been revamped and now features less suede.
  • The tread pattern has also been revised to deliver better traction and flexibility.

If you want more ankle lockdown, check out the Adidas Combat Speed 5. It has a single Velcro strap at the top which enhances ankle support. The strap also serves as a lace garage to keep the shoestrings from getting untied during a game.

Flexibility. The outsole of the Adidas Adizero Varner 2 is made of rubber. It is a hybrid sole wherein the forefoot is not entirely separated from the heel as a strip of rubber connects them. This design allows the unit to maintain flexibility.

Grip. The compound is engineered to be grippy on wrestling mats. The middle strip helps provide constant traction with the mat. The soft nature of the rubber is not ideal to be used on rough surfaces as it could quickly deteriorate.

Stance. Unlike other athletic shoes that employ a full-length midsole, the Adizero Varner 2 from Adidas only features an EVA wedge. By elevating the heel, the wearer’s weight is more on the toes, which allows him to push forward and take down his opponent.

Comfort. Internally, there’s a layer of die-cut EVA foam that provides a comfortable footbed. It also holds the foot in place, preventing it from sliding around during matches.

Breathability. The upper of the Adidas Adizero Varner 2 uses a single layer of mesh. The material has been engineered to be durable and the open-cell construction allows air to flow inside and keep the interior fresh.

Support. The stripey design on the upper is not just for aesthetics. These thin elements perfectly align with the eyelets, so when the laces are tightened, the lateral support is enhanced. The filaments also hold the shape of the top fabric.

Lockdown. The vamp-to-leg lacing system helps to secure the foot. It also enhances the ankle support it provides the wearer. In front of the tongue is a pocket that can be utilized to tuck away the laces so they don’t get in the way during grappling.
