The Adidas Adizero Varner is a result of the collaboration between the brand and Jacob Stephen Varner, or more popularly known as Jake Varner. Varner is a two-time NCAA Division One champion and an Olympic gold medalist in the sport of wrestling.
The Adizero features a low-profile sole unit with a split outsole construction that enhances the flexibility of the platform. Rubber provides traction while the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam wedge and insole help in shock attenuation.
Split sole. The Adidas Adizero Varner features a split sole construction. Rubber makes up the underside of the trainer, but a suede fabric covers some parts of the bottom and wraps the sides of the sole unit. The segmented design keeps it flexible.
Traction. Rubber is seen on the heel and the forefoot. The concentric tread pattern makes it easier to twist and turn without hurting one’s knees while also offering multi-directional grip. The suede wrap decreases the traction, allowing the wearer to perform evading movements.
Cushioning. Wrestling shoes like the Adidas Adizero Varner employ a low-profile midsole to keep the underfoot unit flexible. In this case, an EVA wedge is used to cushion the heel without adding too much weight to the trainer.
Insole. Inside the Adizero Varner is a die-cut EVA foam. This full-length layer acts to decrease the shock felt by the foot without having a bulky sole unit.
High top. Wrestling shoes are crafted with mid or high collars to render ankle support. The Adidas Adizero Varner sports a high top silhouette. This type of construction not only braces the ankle to prevent sprains but also protects the lower part of the leg during movements that involve the use of the leg to pin down the opponent.
Coverage and breathability. The Adizero Varner employs a one-piece engineered mesh. This fabric features an open cell construction that helps ventilate the foot chamber.
Lockdown. This pair of Adidas wrestling shoes uses a toe-to-ankle lacing system. It helps users adjust the fit as well as secure the ankle to keep it stable. The upper material delivers a sock-like fit. There’s also an integrated lace garage on top of the tongue.
